A good filler?.... not.

Post by Taffy Evans » Sun Jul 05, 2009 9:23 am

This is what I have to put up with at times, unwanted help filling holes.

Wasps come into my shop and fill any hole around a ¼’diameter. I have not built a dreadnought for a while so when I dragged this form I use for bending bindings, out off the rack I was not surprised the see the holes all sealed up.

I even had to put my router bits behind a Perspex door, as I would use a bit and before I put it back in the rack the hole it came out of was blocked, filled by a wasp.

Ah Ozzie, if the weather don't make the luthiery harder, the wildlife will!

I finally gave up on my barbecue because the bloody things would fill up any gas outlet into the burners as well. Just not on.

Not a problem we face here in NZ, do they just like plugging up holes or are they under the misguided belief that they are going to build a nest in a 1/4 inch hole? As I say,it's not something I've come across so I'm intrigued :?

I think they lay and egg in the hole and plug it up to keep it safe. Don't bet the farm on that info though.

We get mud wasps filling in holes all around the place too. Not only do they lay an egg, but they paralyse spiders & shove them in the tomb with the egg, before sealing it up. Must be a fairly nasty ride for the spider, waiting for the egg to hatch.

I'd say the spiders don't know too much about it all, but yep, that's what they do.

Watching them do it is eerie to. The sheer size of the spiders and other insects they can find, paralyze and manipulate is scary. Quick too - you can watch them leave the nest and within minutes they'll be back with another victim. Could take me bloody hours to find just one in the yard. They often stuff several into one hole too. Food for the youngsters when they hatch. Many wasps/hornets etc behave in the same manner but some make their own holes whether they build them or dig them, the end result is the same.

If only it were so easy for us eh?

It's not just down under, I have the same problem here in the woods in Oklahoma. Pain in the butt!
