Check out the frets on Frank Gambales guitar

Looks like some sort of compensation worked into the lower frets under top strings. Some reckons its called TT compensation.
The way Gambale plays (like scrambled eggs) you'd wonder why he would need any compensation

I think it might have been someone here in Canberra who came up with that fretting idea. I could never work out how you could do any fret work on it. The Gambales used to own the main music shop here and they were trying to sell the idea as a retro-fit for a while. I just put it down to yet another of those people who just can't accept that guitars will never play exactly in tune. Most people get over it and just play music instead.

There was a discussion on this over at the OLF a while back that was started by Arnt.
Here's a link to it.

I don't think I'd like to be dressing these suckers.

Last time I saw Gambale he had a head of booffy black hair & slimmer waistline. Even attempted to learn his sweep picking technique but ran out of skill long before I got to sound like him

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

But to me this seems even less musical than the stuff he was doing in the 80's...?? Only back then you could put it down to being a bit of a craze...
Why is it that the more a lot of these guys learn about music... the less actual "music" they make...? Holdsworth, Gambale, Scofield, Stern... they seem to go backwards with experience...?
In my eyes even Pat Martino, and dare I say it Joe Pass ( two of my all time favourites ) seem to be in the same boat, the music became/is becoming more of a departure as it goes on?
George Benson on the other hand... Woah! got to see him in '07! He just keeps gettin better!!
oh and yeah... Whacky frets

Could be that the musos are changing. But could be your tastes are changing as well. Its certainly the case for me....I used to love Joe Pass's "old stuff" but these days I get more enjoyment out of watching Schofield and co.
Benson.....hes put out some absolute cr*p over the years. I did see him in Concert in NZ just after Breezin' came out. The concert was great but only because he played mainly stuff that he hadnt recorded and released on record.
Stern....Ive always found his solo work fairly uninspiring but when hes playing with others (eg Brecker Brothers, Billy Cobham) hes hot. I think hes one of those guys who belongs in the band not in front of same.
Just my opinions and when youre talking whats good and bad in music its all opinions.

couldn't agree more...! thats the beauty of it,when youre talking whats good and bad in music its all opinions
and these guys obviously have their fans (and lot's of them!) or they would've vanished years ago...
perhaps I should've said that the more 'abstract' the music becomes? and it's almost as though it's a competition to see who can superimpose the most augmented triads... or displace the most octaves... but it could just be that their ears are bored with the sounds we are accustomed to.
and yeah, my musical tastes are constantly changing... allthough mine is going the opposite way. I used to think it was about how many notes you could jam in... now it's all about how few you can get away with... soon I won't even need to string my guitar!
