Malaysian "Nyatoh"

Hey people.

Has anyone used Malaysian "Nyatoh". I have heaps of this as well as Sepele.

I have a few full pieces of Nyatoh 2000 x 150 x 30mm that has slight figering.

I was just curios if this timber is suitable to build with.

Below are some pis of 1m long piece's. Just got to find that 1 quarter saw piece.

The safest thing to do is to donate your stash to the forum and see if anyone can produce a nice instrument with it, same with the Sapele come to think of it.

Seriously, it looks nice and if worst comes to worst will make very attractive necks. Does it have a tap tone?

Hi Tim,

The board in the image looks to be flat sawn which is still OK because if you rip it down and turn the pieces on edge you will get some nicely quartered lengths from which to lay up some nicely figured necks. Just be aware that Nyatoh is heavy on tools due to the high silica content, it also stinks when you saw it. Treat Sapele as you would any of the Mahoganies it's just a bit heavier tis all.

P.S. Nyatoh is also know as Nato in the Philippines, this wood had been standard fettle for lower end Yamaha acoustics for many many years.

This Timber we use for chair and table design and construction. Our Sepele is used for our 3rd year apprentices that construct a queen anne piece of furniture.

Tap Tone do I wack it against a tap

Yeah all the boards are Back sawn, had a look for some quarter sawn but no luck

I had a play with the timber ripped it into 3mm leafs but didnt like the patten so I'm on the hunt for some more straight grain. only 3m3 to look through

I have 2m3 of sepele wrapped in plastic so I hope somthing special is in side.

Here at work we use

Plantation Radiata pine
Nyatoh
Sepele
we also have some local mahogany for steam bending which hasn't been kiln dried.

Give it away if you come and get it.

Most of the internal doors and farmes in my house are Nyatoh. Dont quote me but Ive heard its listed as endangered in SE Asia.

I built a guitar w/ Nyatoh, purchased from Jeff Yong in KL.
I found it difficult to bend, but a beauty to behold.
Sounds like Mahogany, which is like saying it tastes like chicken, but I didn't taste the Nyatoh. Or hurt the chicken...

Ya, nyatoh is a nice sounding wood. it has a few variant (about 5 over here) Here is a recent build.
I used them mostly for necks. BTW, not only yamaha uses it but check out some big american brands, only comes under a different name.
