Re: Bridge Binding...

I like it Taffy. I had a similar event on one I made last year. I had a nice long FB, of figured Mulga, so I decided to book match a headstock veneer. So, I very carefully set up the band saw, sliced the offcut neatly as you like, sanded and joined it, and continued on my merry way.... Some time lat...

Re: Tips for a virgin electric builder.

Haven't had any direct experience with them, but most of the timbers they sell are available from your local timberyard. MOST timber in Australia is selectively felled these days, and therefor, "sustainable" in a certain definition. I read your desire to make an electric, and I can caution you that ...

Re: Bridge Binding...

It would look great! I've bound a few FB's a;l around and the result is pretty nice. Sadly, I had no intentions of making this one quite so decorated. It's for a mate, and while he's paying me, it's not much, but I like to explore new options on each guitar...so, the bridge is a freebee for Col....

Thanks guys. I was just looking at it, and realised that the fretboard is bound, so why not coordinate the "bling" a bit.

Bridge Binding...

I haven't posted in a while, but I've not been idle. Well, I have, but that was work related. Anyway. I'm about to finish a 12-string I started for a mate 6 months ago. I decided to address the idea that the bridge could be dressed up as much as any other aspect of the guitar, and decided to bind th...

I'm in Brunswick Heads, NSW, which has a pub with the best beer garden on the north coast. I'm not all that crash hot as a luthier, but have a lot of fun with it as a hobby. Happy to meet up if I'm not working. I'm a chef and work all the ours normal people are having fun... :o)

Re: What to charge?

Yeah, Steve. Good points. It's a new body, and I'll prep and buff to a mirror gloss. Wow! $450! Markus, I agree with you as far as there being no real difference in who does the job as long as the job is done right, and I do like to do them right. Hmm. Might go the slab and bottle route for Mark.....

What to charge?

A mate has sasked me to spray a strat body in lacquer for him. I have no idea what to charge. The Mirotone will cost between $10-15, and I fugure about 5 hours time all up....Does $100 soumd reasonable for a hobbyist?

Any thoughts appreciated....

Re: grain thru binding

image.jpg Like this? The bindings for this guitar are cut from the sides. The only real issue I have is that the back, being radiused, requires that the grain lines won't match in most instances if using a rip off the edge.... These are Black heart Sassafrass, and look pretty nice with the guitar f...

Hey Steve. I'll have a go, if you like. I built mine with a few templates I traced off my 52RI. Comparing what I did to yours might be a good idea? I'd be happy to photo document as I go, then you could comment if my method and yours coincide without direct instructions. Let me know if this appeals....

Re: Australia misses out on Mario's wood

Well, at least I know why Mario has a negative rep on ANZlf. Never seen a rendering of the reasons, but, clearly, being down here it's stupid to invest in materials if they turn up ratshit. Costs too much to send the stuff back to the northern hemisphere.....

While I have never bought anything off him, I am currently using a cedar set I got in from Franzoos, when he was down here....

No drama with it, and most references to Mario's timber on other forums are positive, except here in OZ. Anyone got a cogent explanation why this ought to be so?

Re: Fence building

Sadly, I can't draw anything on the computer. Try this. If you imagine the two rail ends meeting, position one multigrip so that the angle rests on the upper, rear corner, with one flange on the top, and one on the back of the rail. The other multigrip is on the bottom the same way. one flange suppo...

Re: Fence building

Hey Col, Have a look at multi-grips. They are a 90 degree bent gal bracket used in building to tie down trusses and rafters. One on top, one on the bottom, on the back side, attached with gal stitch screws. Just overlap the joint on a post, and a bolt thru the centre of each, and you're laughing. Yo...

Re: An OM for Mariann...

Many thanks guys. I really like this one. It helps that the Sassafras is so striking, even out of the centre there is a lot going on. It is better in several areas than my past ones, including the bindings(best effort yet, but still not perfect), and the lacquer finish, which continues to improve. G...
