I really like that one. Asymmetrical yet still book matched. Of the two, I prefer that one for some reason.

Good tip about what side to be taking down when thicknessing. I hadn't thought that the pattern would change so quickly through the board

That's really nicely matched in my opinion Bob. I've seen a few that were no where near that close. I've got a parlor sized set that I'm itching to build, but it means more forms to make..does it ever end?

No worries guys.

I thought that it was probably my turn after Bob did such a great job on the last one. It's great to work with people that you can trust to do the right thing.

Hey, you gotta take heart that your repair is still together. :D I get Stew Mac's newsletter every week or so and one showed doing just such a repair with Hide glue. Dan used thin hide glue to penetrate the very tightest part of the crack and then full strength glue where he could get it in. This wa...

Todd at Allied has contacted me and said that they will be out of the office for about a week, so if I can get the order in by Sunday, they will do their best to get it in the mail on Monday, otherwise it'll be the following Tuesday. So the closing time for getting in on the group buy is Sunday afte...

I would think that the standard length is the way to go, unless the scale length is substantially shorter. Maybe someone that has built one would like to comment.

The parlor plans I have call for 12 frets to the body, so I'll be getting a few of the shorter ones.

The Petite Jumbo Qld. Walnut/Red Cedar box has come in at 950 grams.

The neck block would be adding a bit more to the weight because its Colin's sorta Spanish Heel style. I haven't routed out for the finger board tenon yet. And the walnut planks that I resawed from where HEAVY.

I've contacted Allied Luthiers and they will extend a further discount to us on our group buy's of 60+ rods. They will give us give us their best price of $10/rod. Any combination, mix and match. Right now the tally seems to be 59-60 rods, but I might get a few classical size as well. I'll give this...

That's great Bob. Makes all the difference getting nice tools to work with. If my 2 bay garage wasn't limiting my TAS, I'd have one of those too. And a whole bunch more. I don't know if my wife would talk to me for a while though. I did pick up the ETS Festool 125 sander over the holidays. I've had ...

That's a great looking guitar. When I see most Classical guitars, they have kept so much to the traditional look, that they get a little...well boring for my taste. For me the headstock really sets this one apart. Good onya for trying different woods too. If you don't try them, how will you ever kno...

Off their web site, for 12 or more rods they are asking $13.75 US.

I'll let this run for a day or so and do a rough tally, then get in contact with them for a quote.

Here's some more pictures to show the state of the build. I've pore filled with epoxy after the pictures were taken, and the colors of the wood really pop now. http://www.mcguitars.com.au/phpBB2/userpix/31_100_1928_1.jpg And just to show our northern friends what a tiny bit of the tropics looks like...

Allied Luthiers Truss Rod Group Buy

After the rave reviews about the Allied Luthier truss rods, I'm putting together a order. I'm looking at expressions of interest in a group buy, so that we can defray the shipping costs. I suppose if there is something else that Allied has that you have a burning desire to get, we can work on that a...

If it's just going to be left plain, then I like it with the light to the inside. If it is going to get some sort of a back strip, then probably with the dark inside.

Either way, it's beautiful wood and I don't think you could make a wrong choice. That's a terrible dilemma you have there Bob.

Yes, Berry shellacs the inside of his guitars. I get wood from him fairly regularly, and he's told me he does this to help with wide RH swings. This is the first time I've heard about hide glue being effected by high RH. I was more concerned with wood moving about with changes in the RH. It would be...

Great reading here. As most everything in a guitar is hygroscopic, then shellac is more of a method to slow down moisture getting at the hide glue, at least that is what I'm getting from this discussion. So does an instrument living in the wet tropics probably needs a couple coats of shellac on the ...

I had sealed the insides of my first 4 guitars with shellac but stopped doing it because of many comments about repair issues. If one of the ways of protecting hide glue is to seal it with shellac, what are your thoughts about continuing this practice?

Should we inlet the X-Braces?

I thought I should start a new thread for this as it's really interesting and has some great points of view on differing construction philosophy. These quotes were taken from comments about my current construction of 2 identically built guitars except for the species of top wood. You can view the or...
