Re: Cheap Thermostat AND Timer for a Fox Side Bender.
I would be worried about the fat from the chicken getting into the timber of the side set and making it harder to French Polish.

Re: A question for Trev
Hi Trevor, What percentage of stiffness do you think to CF adds roughly? Are we talking 10 to 15% of more?
My thought being that adding some height to the braces (10 to15%) and then tap tuning the top should work fine without the added complexity of the CF.

Planing soundboards just got easier
I think this could revolutionise small builders who have trouble with hand planes. Seems to be even faster than a wide belt sander and probably gives a better finish. You'll have to follow the link as I can't work out how to embed the movie. http://youtu.be/SiQiyXLv8E8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Re: Baritone Uke bridge compensation
In Stewmacs defence here is a copy of the Fret Position calculator printout clearly showing where to measure to. For myself I would have used the metric version to make the measuring easier. This gives a result of :Ukulele - Non-compensated bridge - 510.9972 mm (±0.5mm) 20" fret scale. I would read t...

Re: Baritone Uke bridge compensation
Hi Cactus, Using Stewmacs compensation will be a good starting point. Depending on the width of your saddle (3mm ?) it should give you enough to get it playing fine. Remember that it is only a starting point and when taken to the N''th degree compensation is only exact for a given set of strings.Cha...

Looks nice Richard. With that short scale lengths you might find it interesting to try some "Nashville Tuning".

Re: A guitar reconstruction
Pretty standard set. When I look at multi-scale guitars they look as if they would need a bigger span of gauges to get the right sound.Optical illusion.

Very nice Dave.Sometimes it is good for the soul to DO something for yourself.Love the soundtrack to go with it. What string gauges have you used across the set?

Re: Electricity converson from the States
I can't imagine you will even get close to a reasonable price to ship one saw over. Bearing in mind that most of the saws in the US come out of China and Taiwan and are available here in different colours it would seem to be easier to buy one here.

Re: First guitar mistake -- I think
Just relax Paul, it will all come together and you might be surprised how good it sounds. No.1 rule is to not point out any flaws to the general public when they are having a look. It is quite alright to do it here even with photos but not to the great unwashed who haven't experienced the agony and ...

Also known over this way as O'Regon or "Irish Pine". I have some very close grain count stuff in the shed and thought it would make uke tops just haven't got around to it yet. Looks like one going in the next batch.

It might be overkill but I love it.As a bloke who loves old cast iron that thing is pure porn and should go "Straight to the Poolroom". Even has a name that could send shivers down the spine of any neck within earshot. The HERCUS!

They are great machines and really quite accurate once set up properly. Cross grain sand for the most as it is easier on the machine and straighten up for the finish cuts. Good dust extraction is a must as these things produce a lot of fine dust.

Re: Uncomfortably Stropless
Hi Craig, Just be careful when stropping the back of the chisel as it is easy to round it over with the "give" in the leather .Light touch. For chisels I prefer to keep it touched up on the stone (6000 grit).Strops are better for knives where you strop both sides.

Hi Jim , It is also good to cover the stack with tin to keep the rain out but in your case you will need to keep it up high to stop the heat.Or stick in some sacrificial plywood as insulation.I also wrap shade cloth around stacks to stop the wind from whistling through and drying the surface too qui...

Looks like a nice one Craig. Bit like the early Stanley 750 series socket chisels. The time spent fine tuning tools usually comes back in the better job you do when using same. I think it comes from understanding how it all works even with a simple tool like a chisel. This is the final re-constructed...
