BTW I work with a mate who is a driller...those other bits are for rock guitars only...and you need at least 200PSI air pressure to get them cracking!

I also want to build archtops, so would love a chat sometime, and have found that there are not so many archtop posts on this forum...maybe when you are up for a chat private message me and we'll set a time.

Re: Hand-wound strings with a round core

Nick, my name is Ross (or Roscoe)...The flatwounds would only be "boomy" on certain guitars...such a qualitative word anyway. But I find that for reggae they have a power and clarity that epitomises the old school reggae rhythm sound. https://youtu.be/8f73TICkFKE In the video Tuff Lion talks about f...

Nick! What a great mind you have!
Todd, a contrasting wooden inlay around the MOP would be lovely and easy.Eg: maple veneer inlayed first into ebony, then Pau abalone dot inlayed into that.I have used CA glue on veneer to bind the grain before drilling and cutting/sanding/filing-Ross

Re: Hand-wound strings with a round core

I play several musical styles, ranging from Gypsy Jazz to American songbook, to modern jazz, blues, reggae, reggae jazz, rock and world music on my Selmer clone, archtops,Fender strat and Gibson 335. I also play upright bass and electric bass, both fretless and fretted. So I use a range of different st...

Mark.My name is Ross. I just spent an hour constructing a detailed post regarding my Selmer knowledge. When I went to post it my login had expired, I logged in again and the post had been lost to wherever. So I dont have the time or energy to do it all again.Sorry!  So when you go to bu...

Thanks for an informed comment Nick! What about my postulation regarding soundboard sensors, controls, electronics, microphones and pickups?
Martin! Perhaps graphene is slippery like graphite and being invisible it could overtake the banana skin as a trip hazard!

Re: For Those Who Think Outside The Square

Well, I think luthierie should be a far greater priority than condoms! That is unless the condoms substantially limit the number of interruptions to the luthierie process! Eg.children and wives who demand time, expensive shoes and overseas trips at the expense of tonewood and workshop expenses!LOL!

Re: An Australian Luthier in Paris

Mark McLean! If you make a "Selmac" using the Charle plans, you will have to fiddle around a bit with the neck angle to get the string height at the twelfth fret to be less than the 5mm that the plan gives, while still maintaining the correct bridge height which is critical to the projection and ton...

For Those Who Think Outside The Square

As a musician, tinkerer, reflective existential phenomenologist and budding luthier, I find this possibility fascinating... http://www.theage.com.au/it-pro/business-it/aussie-mine-set-to-become-source-of-almost-magical-material-graphene-20150629-gi0e4w.html Perhaps graphene will be used in the future ...

Re: Cleaning old grime off a fret board

After the 0000 steel wool, I use a piece of leather to final polish the frets. The tongue from an old leather shoe is a good burnisher. Brings the wood up nicely too. Also good between string changes. I use the rough side first then the fine side. The rough side removes residues and the fine side fo...

Re: Setting up Visual Analyser and capturing a frequency plo

Re posting-a better version of a terrible tap! Also, I held this guitar at the neck where it joins the headstock. I believe we have, on the lowest frequency, the neck mode? Obviously I am new to all of this! These frequencies on each VA sample, seem to move around a bit...I have done some tea leaf re...

Re: Setting up Visual Analyser and capturing a frequency plo

Capture Martin 0015.JPG Maton Premier 45A.JPG A good way to capture screen shots is with a free program called "Snipping Tool". I would like to see a function in VA that allows the user to mark the frequency on each peak rather than just one at a time when you click the cursor over the peak.As an e...

Cheap Vacuum bags

Aldi sell these vacuum bags occasionally, announced in their specials catalogue. There are two sizes, I bought the large one, the small ones are the same price, but you get two. $3.99! I hooked it up to my vacuum pump and it worked fine-didn't try it with a vacuum cleaner, which it is designed for. T...

Re: after laminated plates for an ES-335 style buld

Veneers can be sourced here in Australia, and I suggest you check out the posts in this forum about making your own vacuum bagging system. If you don't want to spend on a vacuum pump, find someone with a vac system and take your own bag to their workshop, eg a picture framer who laminates posters on...

Hi everyone. I haven't read all the posts re visual analyser, but have looked at quite a few. Re: Double bass resto/repair

I am definitely no expert...but why not take the challenge of making an entire new soundboard? I have seen a cheap plywood bass with a damaged top rebuilt with a King Billy or Huon pine top (not sure which) by Wooragee violin maker Kevin Williams. Sounds great and much improved. By the way, Williams...
