Re: Maths boffin angle and curves stuff.
Think of it this way, the top which is a part of a sphere sits on sides that come up to meet it vertically all around so the sphere is not changed. Now the closer you get the centre of the top the closer to 90 degrees you will be the angle betwee the sides and the top. Alternatively, the further fro...

I used a wheel assemebly from a rolling cupboard door. I also used T track for the rig so its adjustable for different scales. I take a few pics and post them. Trevor not many sailing shops in Canberra but there is always something to fit. I like finding stuff from my collection of widgets. Cheers Dom

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet
Cool, I'm just about finished. I need some string data first and I just got some parts for my string rig today So once that's done I can run the optimizer and hopefully get meaningful results.
Thanks for the tips Trevor

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
Hi Rob, I had six holes so I made six pins. 4 are for when I glue the braces to keep them off the holes. And I does not hurt to drop a pin in each holes when it is drilled to keep everything lined up. Some shrink tube stuff on one end of the pins would stop them dropping through the holes and hiding...

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet
Hi Trevor, I am making good progress. I had all the equations done but not applied to all frets so its a matter of organising my data and tables without error. On the circular component of the action, we are first measuring relief at fret 7 between fret 1 and fret 18. The circular component is the a...

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - Plate joining jig
I saw a vid a while ago of a spanish maker using sticks and wedges and one piece of rope. And in 5 mins he had joined about 5 tops which he placed on the floor next to his bench so they were all connected with the one rope. He was so practiced at it, every move he made was perfect and efficient. It ...

Hey Sam, I've seen a custom shop PRS video where they use wood glue for the mitre on headstock binding then CA glue for the rest and they don't seem worry about them mixing. I've also read the ca sticks really well to protien based glues like hide or fish glue. I can't visualise your gluing issue bu...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
Its really the same as just putting a fb through. Just stick your hand under the drum. The infeed table gives enough room to get it going and then I let the feed belt do the work and I don't need to put my hands anywhere near it. I worried that if there is too much overhang there is more chance of i...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
Hi Mike, it does not matter as long as your drum is level. You can do tapered fb's as well. Think of it like the router version that sits on curved rails, but this time keep the router (or drum sander level) and tilt the fb around the radius. As I mentioned, these rails are 16", I'll make a set of 1...

Re: 7 String Falcate Flamenco
Thanks Jeff, once I have my ideas resolved I'll mock it up and post the results. My problem is that once I get motivated I want to do all the projects I have been thinking about and I have already committed myself to finish my bass, make a couple of CS356's and do these clones with all the jigs maki...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
OK, I got the fretboard radius jig I mentioned done today. This is with 16" rails. A 1/4" fretboard sits 1.5mm above the curved rail and scribes a 16" radius as the fret block moves around the arch. I still have to add a centre line and some pins to hold my fretboards and tick makes around the rails...

Re: 7 String Falcate Flamenco
Thanks Jeff, one more thing, how much room do you need at the bottom of the heel to go from a low action to a high action. It wouldn't be much. 1 to 5 ratio or so? For a cutaway I want a nice smooth joint where the hand goes. So I could deal with a small gap for a high action and no gap for a low ac...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
Thanks for the picture Nick, I should have read more carefully, I thought you meant the side flutes. It was them that opened up the hole once it grabbed and lifted one end. But I get it now, its the same as a negative rake angle on a non-ferris saw blade, it pushes the stock down rather than lifting...

Re: 7 String Falcate Flamenco
Hey Jeff, I saw a vid on youtube of your on-the-fly adjustable guitar neck. (That is your guitar isn't it?) Have you put up any pics of how it works? Does your heel move in a recess in the headblock or do you just let there be a gap? And what is your pivot point? I have been doing raised fingerboard...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
That's a good idea Nick. I realised very quickly how little experience I had with precision metal work once I started to try drilling accurate holes. Would I be able to fill the dodgy hole in the other brass block with solder or something so it can be salvaged? Brazing or something? I might make a b...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
Thanks, its pretty easy to do it this way. I suppose I just need to rough up the bottom epoxy carbon layer so it keys in with the new glue and top. I scored the shape in the wood blanks but left them a little over size. Once the carbon epoxy had set I cut off as much as I could with scissors and the...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
Hi Trevor, A question about my method for bridge patch construction. Can you see any issue with gluing the carbon fibre to the wood patch, then shape it then glue it to the soundboard? I assume you do it in one go to make things faster but am I missing anything? I am sure there will be room for the ...

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet
OK, so it is a mix of a circle and an ellipse on top of each other. That makes sense now. I think the hockey stick analogy got me because in my mind, that shape is circular at the end, then blends into a straight handle. Or there is the Manns hockey stick with it exponential growth at the end. So th...

Hey, the neck is laminate with maple and walnut and NGR. Plus carbon fibre deep into the neck. I have some mahogany blanks but I might make the centre section out of laminates as well then add the wings and make the step in the body. Qld maple would be fine. You'll want to make another one anyway so...

Hey Martin, i was getting jaggy plots like yours at first and it turned out to be double tapping on a micro level. I started using the corner of the rubber so on contact it did not slap and my plots started looking like the book. Also light taps with a light touch so the hammer bounces right off. Th...

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet
Thanks Trevor, does that mean that the C and E components run to the 12th fret so B is linear? As for the geometry, so I can see it in my head, your hockey stick analogy implies that it is a circle, and ellipse and the line. I get that the proportions can change but I don't know what you mean by sup...

Re: 7 String Falcate Flamenco
Hey Jeff, is that american walnut or Qld? Pretty light so far. And longer saddle area. I like 21 holes, so much neater not having the string wrap over the tie block.
Look forward to the finished thing.

Cool, I just pulled out a thunderbird bass project that had taken a back seat for a few years. I have a nice neck made but need to do the body. I have the same templates as you. But I am going to do a bolt on neck though. I have some nice EMG pickups for it. Better get going on mine as well then. Go...
