Re: Label design
Agree with all Nice, uncluttered and stylish concept - stick with that theme. The grey colour to the font, scrolls etc is great too. Have to agree with Allan though, the Malu font is a bit too "happy" for me sitting on top of the more classic cursive script. - feels like it'd be better for tropical ...

Re: Mandocello plan/advice
Hi Brett No nothing about these myself - but you got me interested enough to have a look around. You're right, not much in the way of actual plans. Most talk is around A and F style instruments. This guy gives some overall dimensions in a table for the whole family: http://smart-instruments.com/amlu...

Fun way to play the cello
Lyrics a tad repetitive, but looks like it was fun to be on stage !

Absolutely stunning Trevor, what a brilliant combination of craftsmanship and timber !
….. and, if the reflections of the bridge pins are anything to go by, not too shabby a finish on it either

OK -so I admit I went over to this site just to check out what the heck was going on. ….but seriously, I couldn't be bothered to wait for the home screen to fully load. Much as I wanted a bit of a laugh I just don't have the patience to wait for obviously hugely oversized graphics to load from what ...

Re: Finishing Question
I'm going to have to scrap the ziricote ones as they were far above the weight I was aiming for (6-7 grams) - They weigh in at about 9 Use a jig saw to cut a hole in them, maybe in a shape your customer would choose (and charge $20 more :D ). Necklace pendant .......key ring dangly thing ........ D...

Re: It's been even longer!!
Ah, that's what it is. The F holes looked unbound from the top, but I could have sworn it was a black inner edge from the close ups.
Anyway - love it. Sure the new owner will be stoked, personally I'm not sure I'd have let it go

Re: It's been even longer!!
Absolutely gorgeous Rod. As others .... In awe of that.
For my own interest, did you bind the F holes ? It's not obvious from the images - just looks like a super clean line.
Anyway superb and thanks for sharing.
Cheers

Re: Finishing Question
Sorry Stu- forgot to actually answer. Used a rubber/pad. One side at a time and gave it a chance to dry a bit before flipping over to other side. I had some nice super blonde shellac and a primed rubber sitting there as I'd just finished working on the latest build. Don't think rubbing it between a ...

Re: Finishing Question
Quite a few coats Stu. Built up a layer, scuffed it back and started over. Damned fiddly on small things. But it worked for me in the past on carved bowls and the like. You can get a real good sheen if you build it up, not exactly French polishing though. But I wasn't sure how it'd hold up with swea...

Re: Finishing Question
Looking good Stu. I too made some bits and bobs (pendants etc) for my better half (singular, none of this multiple "friends" malarkey) - seemed a good way to explain the amount of time in the shed - can't really complain if I'm making stuff for her :D I also pondered on appropriate finish - ended up...

Re: Drum sander vs scraping plane
Not sure about the scraper plane only.
Built my first tenor uke with a Stanley Handyman and hand sanding. The Blackwood I used wasn't happy with the plane, so pretty much all hand sanded.
Proved it was possible - then bought a drum sander

Re: The Chamber of Death!
There was a major moisture problem with the guitar in Katherine. During a flood the owner put the guitar in its case on top of the wardrobe, but the water got that high and the guitar was floating. Even though the back and top had separated from the rims the owner wanted it repaired, so I said I wo...

Thats the problem Taffy - I can't control it - I just have this strong desire to torture myself watching nature laugh at me  Seriously - not that paranoid, half of those belong to Alan the ozziebluesman plus the psychrometer and data logger I borrowed from an air-con systems guy. I got a bit ca...

Hi Jim,
for us in Townsville it was a non-event. Decided towards the end to dip down the coast and made landfall around Bowen. One of my guys at work has family there and appears not to have got bashed around too much.
All in all - a bit of a practice run for the next one
