Re: matthew's new bass

Nick, I just build it a bit thicker and leave the edgework a bit more robust to deal with dings. I use chladni pattern analysis and weights to let me know when the plate is getting around the right thickness. Oh and a gut feeling and some mumbo jumbo.

Re: newcomer and bunnings guitar

Three years ago I built a double bass from well chosen quarter sawn Tas Oak and WRC entirely from Mitre Ten. It is a fabulous instrument and I have had no issues with wood shrinkage or movement. The flat back is cross-braced, 670mm wide and the ribs 210mm. Entirely glued with hide glue. You'd think ...

Re: Crack repair

if it were a bass or a cello I'd reinforce the inside of the crack (even though you can't see it on the inside ) with a strip of good linen soaked in hide glue.

ALDI this week

Wireless remote control powerpoints, three per pack. about $20.

Good for turning on the dust collector from across the room. And control light shows for parties.

Re: what is tone wood?

The way I experience it, the top wood provides the volume and underlying tone, and the back and sides act as tone filters. The fact that you have some wood with muddy taptone doesn't mean it won't sound good in an instrument, although for a soundboard I feel you nearly always want something that rin...

any Northern Territory members needing a piano tuneup?

Yes its a blatant plug for a fellow musical instrument technician. In a week or two, my brother Martin is doing his annual trip to Alice Springs and Darwin. He's a great piano technician and tuner, and people with these skills are in very short supply in the centre and up north. So I'm just letting ...

Re: Spool Clamps

I have made many spool clamps from cheap 1/4" threaded rod from bunnings, scrap timber and wingnuts. I need over 50 for a double bass. I have found that although the round ones like Markus made might look nicer, a square-ended spool clamp is actually more useful, as it has a wider flat surface for g...
