Has he numbered the plates so you know what pieces mate up, or are they so closely matched that it doesn't matter all that much?

Oh, Luthiers never use the word "mistake" and instead replace it with the word "innovation." Then I've got all sorts of innovations happening on my guitars  There are two types of Queensland Walnut. The more common one is lighter colored and more variation in tone. This one is a really d...

Thanks Bob, the rosette is sort of a mistake. I had laid it out to be just one ring of shell and a BWB purf on either side, but must have had a dyslexic moment and cut on the wrong line, so this was how I made it a feature. 8)

Progress pictures of my Fat Bottom Girl

I've had a bit of a productive weekend. Made some bindings and purflings, Inlaid the end graft, bound the body and sanded it out. This is the first time I've done a sound port, so I thought I would give it an Australian feel. I cut it before I bent the side, but I think that if I was to do it again ...

I'll never tell :D

McLaren Vale Shiraz is my favorite, but don't drink that and work with sharp tools at the same time.

You just can't believe how heavy it is. The piece I sent Tim was a left over piece from a very large picnic table. Some mates used most of the rest to build a dinning room table that would seat 6. When they were done it took 6 men to be able to lift it into the back of a ute, and were they every str...

That's looking good Alan. You deserve get a big pat on the back for doing all this by hand. I've got a lot of patience, but I'm not sure if I have enough to do one of these all by hand.

That's come out really nice Tim. Did you get more than one set out of the planks?

It does age quite nicely. That plank was an Oxblood red/brown before it was run through the thicknesser. It will change fairly quickly over about a week, then slowly get progressively darker.

Thanks Sam, makes sense now.

A photo tutorial for the archives when you have time would be fantastic. I've not seen one on how to do this on any forum.

Been running a week now and it just gets better. I had problems loosing my connection to my air port, but since the upgrade it's worked flawlessly. there are heaps of neat new features that pop up with use, and everything just works so much faster. This is the first upgrade to OS X that I would say ...

Please, Please, Please give use a tutorial on how you inlay your rosettes Sam. It's got me stumped at how you get such a clean inlay for such a complicated shape.

Yah Tim, we love all instruments makers here. And that is a really nice looking violin. I like the antique look very much....I wonder if there is a market for antiqued guitars?

I've use D'addario Custom lights and like them alot. I've got their extra lights #Ej15's on my cutaway right now and they are nice, but I prefer the custom lights. I've used the GHS's as well, but find the D'Addario's to be brighter especially in the trebles.

Very interesting image. So that little oval pad is for the sound post I assume? That back has got to be resonating along with the top. Seems very lightly built compared to the shots you provided. I could be way off base here (excuse the pun) but does the back really need a lot of strength to resist ...

I agree Craig, those are some massive braces even scaled to a guitar size. But then I know squat about Double Bass's. They're obviously built to that size for a reason. I switched to 2 tall and reasonably thin upper transverse braces on my guitar backs and then a X-brace for the lower bout. The only...

Here's mine. Most of the time it's stored under some of the other clutter. I just dug it out to show you my set up. The guitar is clamped in a cradle and the trimer is run around the perimeter. I use a Cutter with bearings. You could also mount it permanently to the wall if that's an option for you....

Boy, that really is close. I had sort of given up on the idea of Cooktown Iron Wood and some other odds and ends of local wood that I've got hiding in the corners simply because of the weight. I think that I'll knock one or two out this weekend and see what comes of it.

What way would you angle the slot Hesh, towards the pins? What does this hope to improve?

How much smaller a footprint would you say it is now? Any worries about gluing surface?
