Re: Moving to the Desert

Hey Jim, its nice to know we'll be "neighbors". You'll only be about 3 hrs away, which is a darn site closer than AU or NZ. I've not lived in the Silver City area before, but I'm not totally unfamiliar with the Land of Mañana. I was stationed out at WSMR in the mid '90s. When I got out of the Army, ...

Re: Moving to the Desert

Yes, there is a fire season here. There have been a few big fires over the years, but that's too be expected. White Sands Missile Range had a brush fire when I was stationed there. Not a fun time. Yucca and mesquite burn really hot.

Re: Moving to the Desert

Thanks Dave. I appreciate the response. It will be exciting and challenging. My brother-in-law is dealing with some health issues so we're moving in with him. The country is more lush up here against the Gila National Forest, but it is still desert. There are trees, real trees and not just over grow...

Moving to the Desert

Life threw us a curve ball. Before the year is out, we will be moving to New Mexico's high desert. One of the buildings we will be putting up will be a shed of course. Is there anything I need to keep in mind for the shed and I guess for building as well?
Thanks in advance.

Re: It's not all bad news....

Peter, no one should have to deal with the mess we have going on here. Stupid doesn't begin to describe things. I am very grateful you guys aren't dealing with our numbers, but then again it seems that you to have an adult in charge there. No one that I know of has ever called President Tweety an ad...

Re: It's not all bad news....

Part of the increased shipping time you are seeing is that all the couriers and the post office are dealing with a massive increase of packages and fewer people working the system. Our Post Office was the first to report a positive test result in our town back in late March. Mail delivery as been sp...

Re: Very slow weissenborn wip

Hi Lillian Look no really good advice im afraid, as i must admit I'm not 100% happy with the finish at the moment. Tru oil is certainly a nice product but i dont think i have it dialled in yet. Though I must admit i think i have higher expectations than most, everyone who has seen it reckons it's f...

Re: Very slow weissenborn wip

Looking good Steve. It's coming along nicely. But for the record, I think I have you beat by a decade. I started my first guitar about 14 years ago and had to put it a side to deal with life. The body is closed and bound. It needs to be sanded and finished. The bottle of Tru-Oil finally showed up We...

You could do both, put a heel cap on and then taper from the waist to meet it.

Thanks for the reply mate. I should of been more specific I was talking more steelstring guitars. Probably a silly question but in what sence is the open pores a possible drawback ?
Dirt and grim will get stuck in the pores and make the board look, well dirty.

Re: Building a Baritone Uke

The top and back are now joined to the sides. That went surprisingly well. I was going to trim the overhang tonight, but I can't find the spindle wrench for the router. Actually I'm not sure I had one. The Colt has a spindle lock, but my left thumb isn't strong enough any more to hold the lock in wh...

Re: Building a Baritone Uke

Western Red Cedar is indeed soft but makes a great soundboard on nylon strung instruments. Yellow Cedar is a bit harder and also makes a great soundboard. I've used both for clients. Yup, I'm familiar with cedar as a soundboard. I'm planning on using WRC on the next one. But this is the first time ...

Re: Building a Baritone Uke

Thanks for the pic Murray. Its paw prints, the question is canine or feline. I'm going to go with man's best friend. Which of the many cedars did you use? I'm not sure if any of the local cedars are hard enough to consider using. What I've come across will dent if you look at them hard.

No worries CNCWorksNZ, ah, mind sharing your name? Your user ID is a tab bit long.

Any chance of seeing the rosette? In your opinion, does the body shape affect the sound? Or did you change too many elements to really say?

Re: Building a Baritone Uke

Thanks Allen. I do remember that jig, now that you've mentioned it. I ended up gluing the StewMac back and putting a strip of sandpaper down between the braces and using it to put the radius on the other braces. It seems to have worked. The last brace on the scratch build is gluing up now.

Building a Baritone Uke

I decided to do a scratch build along side of the StewMac kit. So far so good. Got the plates joined and planed/sanded to thickness. That was actually therapeutic. Nice sharp blade making curlies appear. But it's been awhile since I've done anything, so I got a blister on my palm, which sent me to t...

We had a few forest fires while I was there that were scary, but they were nothing like what you guys are deal...

Gawd that's right, your summer has just begun. If I could send the atmospheric river we had the past few day down your way I would. We were supposed to get ~7" of rain in 72 hrs. I think we ended up with about 4" in 48 hrs. No rain today.
Mark, Bruce glad to hear you are okay.
