Figured NZ silver pine

Also called manoao.
I'm considering buying this
http://www.rarefind.co.nz/gallery3/inde ... -1317-35-1
Back and side set is $400.

Are there any luthiers here who could give an opinion as to whether silver pine makes decent box or not?

Re: Harden Up (your chisels)

AG, what colour is the steel going to be at 180C.
I've been quenching in water when the steel gets to a dull red to try and get the tool hardness up. Time for a change of technique me thinks!

Re: Home built circle cutter

Thanks Steve, Trent, This is not as easy as I first thought - not quite sure what level I should pitch it at. It gives me a lot more respect for the efforts you put into your tutorials Steve. Greg I haven't forgotten you. Your question on the cutting tips has lead me down tracks I'd never considered...

Home built circle cutter

As requested Steve. I've been thinking for a while it's about time I put something into the forum - I've certainly taken enough out! But I'd didn't think the cutter would've been of much interest as most folks on here are keen on their power tools - and who can blame them - power tools make the job ...

A lurkers reply

First off I'd like or to thank those who give their time up to keep this forum running, those who give so freely of their knowledge and experience and those novices who ask the dumb questions I'm to embarrassed to ask! Without you all I'd be floundering in a sea of incompetency. Here's a couple for ...

Here is a 650mm Vernier caliper https://m.ebay.com/itm/STARRETT-NO-123M ... 2731788098.

The other way is to take the straight edge to a machine shop and give them the length and tolerance to machine it down to.

Re: Non conventional neck reset how to..

Thanks for that Steve.
More clamps with less pressure - makes a lot of sense. And the 1mm pins. Much easier than trying to hold things to a pencil line.
I've also been considering copying the tile layers and using a serated scrapper to get a more even spread of glue under the fret board.

I like that Steve. And as I'm needing a pickup it is food for thought. As I don't have a magnetic source at home, would making the poles by inserting a neodymium magnet into a mild or stainless steel shank work?

Re: Help with a delaminating head needed.

This is after 48 hrs drying between the clamps, 24 in the glue press and 10mins sanding. It came out of clamps within 1/4mm of flat. The celluloid lamination is now a good 1mm undersize. I would never have considered it contracting over time. Many thanks for sharing your tricks on the art of wizardr...

Re: Help with a delaminating head needed.

Yup Trevor that is a celluloid lamination. I was hoping to leave it on as I expected it to come off in 5 pieces. Following Steves instructions, it just peeled of easy as. Even came off in one! The head is as flat as can be expected. It's sitting clamped in a cool dark corner to dry out before gluein...

This is after 1 day wrapped in a wet rag.
It's going to get another day under the rag and I'll clamp again.

Cheers for that Steve.
It's sitting with a wet rag round it as we speak. 24hrs on the rags and them I'll try the clamps. I'll let you know how it goes.

Help with a delaminating head needed.

A mate gave me an old hofner archtop with a broken neck to repair. The head has also started to come apart. I tried to re-glue the delaminations by cleaning, clamping and hide glue with absolutely no success. The only other way I can think of is to have another go with epoxy, but I have a bad feelin...

Finish

If doesn't look good no one is going to pick it up to try it.

But the skill set I have to improve - apart from everything - is patience. To many set backs frpm taking the clamps off to soon!

You make it look so easy. No tear out and a nice flush finish. That's a sexy looking circle cutter you're using. I've got a modified paper gasket cutter. If I take slow and steady it does ok - but not as neat as yours!

Re: Monterey Cypress

That's a nice wee uke there Bruce. I like it a lot, definitely worth a trip up to the local mac sawmill. Most macs are grown as individual trees or in single rows out here. That let's them branch sideways into gnarly old bastards. So we get big tight knots and plenty of figure. I've got a few unimpo...

Re: Monterey Cypress

Monterey cypress sounds a lot sexier than macrocarpa. I was wondering if it'd be worth making ukes out off. Cheap easy to work and has nice solid knots for a full figured back board.
