Re: falcate nylon "cross-over" style

Really pretty guitar, Mark. It's nice to see a classical that is different to the usual Hauser or Torres shape. If my counting is right... the 13 fret join means 20 frets and still plenty of real estate for the soundhole to be a circle (although even more space in this case with the oval). Nice ide...

Re: Spruce/cypress classical

Lol Martin, I hadn't noticed that on the can, now I can't unnotice it. After reading that crazy scary epoxy thread in the health and safety section I refuse to touch the stuff... I plan to either stick to this can of healthy living or to do a shellac FP in future. Bruce, I hit record on the iPhone t...

Re: Spruce/cypress classical

Thanks Mark. It's funny how things work out sometimes... my favourite design element is the cypress back and sides. While it's a AAA soundboard, I used cheap B grade cypress for the back and sides. I also have some top grade cypress, but after using the B grade it turns out I much prefer the interes...

Re: Spruce/cypress classical

Thanks all.

Bruce - I haven't recorded a sound clip yet but will do so shortly. The sound has opened up a lot the last couple of days... if it keeps improving on this trajectory I might just have to keep putting it off longer!

Re: Spruce/cypress classical

Thanks Richard. Yeah, it's a first but what you see now was my second crack at a couple of components.... there's a rosette on the inside and a second backstrip too! The first were practise ones.. cough

Re: Spruce/cypress classical

Thanks guys, especially Martin for the rosette advice from your build thread. I've now built three rosettes this way (pics below) - I'm a fan of the look. Paying it forward... if anyone wants to know the method I used.... 1. Draw the design on baking paper or similar then cut and join the pieces a t...

Spruce/cypress classical

Finished my first guitar build... (well, the first coat of finish went on last night). It's euro spruce and mediterranean cypress with rosewood bindings and a rosewood rosette. I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out...there's plenty of volume, intonation is ok, and the tone isn't too bad at all...

Looks great, Graham. My next build will be Wenge so I'm glad to see how nice this guitar turned out!

What did you use to pore fill?

Cheers

Re: Cocobolo classical

Beautiful looking guitar, Wayne, congratulations.

That jarrah rosette ties in really nicely with the cocobolo, but all the wood choices are great on this guitar :)

Is the armrest stuck on or held in with magnets? Looks great.

Re: Quiet in here

Cypress/spruce classical build is on hold until the rain stops ... it has been wet on and off for a week or so.

But I do have a Laguna to assemble this weekend ;)

Some new design ideas...

Stumbled across this website just now which has a rather innovative guitar. Actually there are so many modifications I'm amazed it still sounds like a classical in his YouTube clips. Obviously a lot of thought and development has gone into the design ... What do you think about the various elements?...

Re: Bandsaw advice

I recently purchased the Laguna 1412 . Not the suv though. Along with a 3/4" resaw King blade. If you want to do any resawing, this is the best thing I have ever bought. I am cutting Blackwood and tiger myrtle backs about 4 mm thick as straight as you would ever want. It would cut them 1 mm if you ...

Re: Bandsaw advice

Cheers all

Turns out the second hand Jet was "incomplete" and has now been withdrawn from sale.

Have decided to double the budget to 2k and get the Laguna 14 12 and a 1/4 inch blade.

Re: Bandsaw advice

The Jet machine looks good ... I'll aim for one of those (looks like Gregory's has one second hand at the moment). Re old school = solid, stumbled across this 36" beast on gumtree just now ... http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/mitchell/miscellaneous-goods/wolfenden-36-inch-bandsaw-tilt-table-hardly-use...

Re: Bandsaw advice

Thanks all for the advice, saves me buying the wrong thing! Also cheers for the heads up on Gregory's and Machinery House, I didn't know about those either. It sounds like 14" is the option... And I shouldn't be stingy as it is an important bit of kit. Now to find the best one for the budget, which ...

Bandsaw advice

Hi all I'm looking to get a bandsaw that will handle my guitar building needs. Cutting through plywood by hand to create forms does not sound like fun to me! I don't know much about them - can you please recommend a decent brand? The books I have suggest 14" for guitars, but that's bigger than the t...
