Re: Scalloping the lower bout transverse brace

Could you please clarify Trevor. I read your response and had to find that section in the book because I had been using something a little different for my guitars. That paragraph says "The B(1,1) resonance is generally slightly lower in frequency than the fully coupled T(1,1)3 resonance in the comp...

Thank you so much. Very kind comments from you all. It's funny how once you get it in your blood, it becomes a part of you. Looking forward to my next one.

Medium Body Falcate

Hello. My name is Eric. Never posted here, but have gotten great advice from Trevor and company in "The Book" section. This is my 4th guitar, and second using Trevor and Gerard's process. Specifics: OM sized steel string. 12 fret to the body with cut-a-way. Indian Rosewood back and sides. Sitka with...

Re: Nut compensation

Thank you Trevor, I'll go back to the drawing board and make sure all the parameters are set correctly: Relief, action, nut string height and try again. Re-reading Apdx V was helpful. I'm sold on the concept, my execution just needs to be better. I was slated to join you at Robbie's class in July. I...

Nut compensation

I'm finishing up my forth guitar, and second one using both nut and saddle compensation. I have run into the same issue with both of them, although the first one ended up sounding terrific. I'm using the books second best method "Compensation without most of the mathematics" - Design pg. 4-119 (the ...

Re: Closed box T(1,1)2 less than 200 Hz - Edge thinning

Thank you John. That's as clear as it can be made. Somehow I had the relationships backwards in my mind, and am probably putting too much emphasis on bridge rotation. Trevor had indicated to me earlier that it is just one of many considerations, and probably not the most critical one. I'll see where...

Closed box T(1,1)2 less than 200 Hz - Edge thinning

I just closed the box of my second OM sized falcate (fourth guitar overall). This one is a sitka bear claw top and IER back and sides. On the two I have built, the T(1,1)2 have both come in at less than 200 Hz at this phase. #1 = 100-193-235 for T 1 2 & 3 (14 fret, sitka braces with 6.5 mm max brace...

Re: Unusual Panal Size

Thank you Trevor, I looked at that page and it's a section summary, none of which talks about a three point bend test. I also reviewed the panel tap testing sections of both Design & Build books, but could not find any information on this. Could you elaborate more on this three point bend test, or r...

Unusual Panal Size

A few years ago--pre The Books--I purchased the attached four piece book-matched set of Honduras Rosewood with the intent of making two guitars out of it. As you can see, I will not be able to get full rectangular panels for the backs to do analysis for target thickness. Two OM sized templates just ...

Spectrum change with age

I was talking with the new owner of my latest guitar about the likelihood of it sounding better as it "settles in" with more use. It's fairly well accepted that as instruments are played more and age, they tend to sound better; or at least different. This got me thinking, and wondering if anyone has...

Re: Spectrum results

Thank you so much for the advice Trevor, you really sent me in the right direction, and your advice was spot on. This is all starting to make sense to me. I strung it up and fine tuned the relief, nut slot depth and action. Ended up with 13 mm string height at the bridge. I averaged 10 plots on the ...

Spectrum results

My guitar is 99% complete. It’s a OM sized, 14 fret, live back, falcate. I did the spectrum with no strings so I could get to the inside easier if necessary (I’m not sure if taking spectrum analysis with strings on or off makes any difference). Bridge with intonated saddle and 6 bridge pins = 25g. N...

Re: Bridge Rotation at 2.3deg

Thanks for the heads up Trevor. I'll look into it. Coming from Alaska makes it difficult, but knowing your travel itinerary, I guess I shouldn't complain. With your connection to Charles Fox, have you approached him to sponsor an symposium? I very much enjoyed the time I spent learning his process. ...

Re: Bridge Rotation at 2.3deg

Thank you both for your replies. I think trying to manipulate the braces in a no-go. And Trevor, you have put my mind at ease. I'll put bridge rotation lower on the priority list. Thank you so much for your books. Such a pleasure to have great and relatively easy to follow guidance in this passion. ...

Re: Bridge Rotation at 2.3deg

If you don't mind, I'd like to jump in here as I've just measured the rotation on my current build last night. The subject is a medium body, 14 fret, falcate (sitka spruce) with carbon fiber per the Books. My 3rd guitar and first using the Gore/Gilet process. The tops (sitka again) thickness is good...

Re: Wood for Falcate Braces in UK

I have had 100% good luck with sitka. I use very precise male/female forms that clamp together and support the wood well. I use three, 1/16" thick plys. The forms were made using a 3/16" diameter, bearing guided straight router bit so they exactly match the width of the three finished plys. I glue w...

Re: Help with my spectrum

Thank you Trevor, Those references help considerably. I'm going to dive back into the books in more detail to proceed, but in your opinion, would you continue to relieve the back brace at this time, or wait until the bridge and saddle are attached? It's not nearly relieved as the books suggest to st...

Hello to everyone, I have completed the box of my first falcate braced guitar and would be grateful to you all for some input/advice on the resonances it has at this point. Three Random Questions

Hello, my name is Eric. I'm new to the forum, forgive me if this is tired subject matter. I live in Anchorage Alaska and build purely for fun. I have two OM sized SS's completed, the first was under the supervision of Charles Fox at the American School of Lutherie. His class was a terrific experienc...
