One for Me and a Mini-me for me

The whole point of me getting into building guitars was so that after a bit of practice building for the kids I could build myself a high spec lefty acoustic. The time has now come to start it! Inspired by X-ray's similar Two-OMs-at-once post, I am going to document the process here. I really enjoy ...

Hi Xray If my eyes do not deceive me, you are using the Grellier plans for your OM. I really like that shape and its appeals to me more than the Antes plan that came with my LMI OM kit. so I'm going to use that instead. When I printed out the plan on the plotter at work for the first time. I forgot ...

Actually three more questions....

How many plies? I did 5 and if feels much too much.

Hi Tim, I am building a travel guitar, small version of an OM a bit like a big uke and have some veneer I wanted to use for the back and sides. Im assuming you laminated the sides out of sheets of veneer. Can I ask you what glue you used to glue them together??. I just had a go at gluing with some p...

I have to admit, I'd never heard of this guy, so when I saw this, I spent a couple of wonderful hours looking at youtube which lead to looking for the transcript of Bach's cello concerto which is one of my favourite pieces of music - which lead to finding it, which lead to sitting down with the fina...

Thanks all for comments The rimu was OK, although I didnt have to do too much to it, I put the bits through the thicknesser then just had to sand it to get it nice and level. The routing wents OK, it tends to burn if you go too slow or try to do too much, so it was a matter of many passes make light...

Rimucaster??

I havent quite sorted out the name for this, but THIS is one of MY favourite guitar shapes - Number 4 has been a learning experience in many ways and as usual my excitement at seeing and hearing the finished guitar has got in the way of the inner perfectionist I am trying to encourage. I think he wa...

Hi Jim I built my last from a Stewmac dreadnought kit and not knowing any better, I just sanded the white plastic bindings along with the top. back and sides. It seemed to behave the same as the wood. I cant remember exactly how long I left it until I sanded it, but it would have been a couple of we...

Hi James To add my bit to Kims comments .. One tip I read somwhere was to find an old pair of pincers from a second hand shop and grind the top until you have a flat surface across the jaws and only a bevel on the inside. Go slowly and keep them cool to avoid drawing the temper out of the steel. Whe...

Hi Dave, I realise I probably didnt explain this properly - this is just a tailpiece, the bridge you see in the photo is just an anchor so I could use it for nylon as well as steel strings. The strings are tied off at the old bridge, go down and though the plywood, (see the two little holes in the s...

Another DIY intonation jig (for pre-made bridges)

I have seen another intonation jig on the site, so thought I would show you all this one and see what you think When I was gluing on the bridges I wanted to make sure I had the best compromise for intonation. I had the dimensions from the kits but thought it would be a mission to fix if they weren't...

has anyone seen any hard information telling us that it does in fact make that joint that much stiffer Graham, I have done some numbers on the cross brace joint. Using a 16mm by 8mm brace, the brace that has the bottom notched and is continuous at the top is 5 times stiffer than the other one, that...

Graham - Check out the current thread on Allen McFarlen's 000 where there has been lots of informed discussion on the bracing layout. Thanks for that Graham - Allen - I have just looked at your Norman Blake thread and see that on the cross brace joint you have made one brace a bit higher than the o...

Graham - thanks again. last nights googling led me to the excellent USNW website and through the Chladni patterns to Ernest Somogyi's lecture on bracing. It was all very interesting. What I took from this relatively short session was: 1. The first three or four modes of oscillation of the soundboard...

A lefty builders legacy dilemma.....

Having built two "practice" guitars (one for for each my right handed sons) my next build is for my left-handed self. I expect the guitar to outlive me and would like to think that one of my two guitar playing boys could change the bridge over fairly easily and make it a right hander. However the br...

Since becoming addicted to this forum (which is great) I have noticed that many of you luthiers seem to suffer from a common affliction which I can only describe as emoticonitis.
