Re: Guitar builders

As an admin of the forum your request is hereby deemed to be ethical Mat. That was good advice to your friend but being on the west coast I will leave it to other members to recommend QLD/Brizzy builders.

Re: Piece holding techniques when hand planing

Hey Frank, Joe Woodworker has a DIY plan and has everything needed to put it all together. Shipping is a killer of course so Ebay/Gumtree is the way to go for your pump, and you can get any brass fitting you need from Masters Hardware. You can do it all on the cheap if you take your time and look ar...

Great vid as always Robbie. You know it ceases to amaze me how you manage to pull off the most concise, nonsense tutorials, one after the other. I'm sure we all agree that there are many ways to do each task when building a stringed instrument. But for anyone starting out and looking for a method th...

Re: Piece holding techniques when hand planing

I use my vacuum system for heaps of stuff, much much more than just lutherie. The other day I used it with a platen and bag to lay up bookmatched sheoak veneers onto a number of plywood drawer fronts. With the bag I was able to glue up 4 drawer fronts at a time, each turning out with a perfect glue ...

Re: Cocobolo rosette nightmare

As to what caused the issue I think it was probably a combination of things...Cross grain shrinkage as Curly suggests, perhaps a variation in RH, and the simple fact that a spruce substrate will expand and contract with changes of RH far more quickly, and to a much greater degree than 'nail hard' co...

As already stated we've all had a close call or two over the years, I know I've had my share..But workshops aside, as a former motorcyclist I had attracted some rather serious road war injuries which needed to be overcome, and in some cases, adapted to...Pleased to say it seems that regardless of th...

Yeah, if that is you Chris, really good video and thanks for posting. I know full well you've been on the 'walkabout' trail for unique native timbers to use in your drum production for a very long time. I recall many years ago when I had been involved in the stair building business. You were kind en...

If you consider the volumes, especially since off-shore on-line shopping became so popular, I reckon the Aussie Customs crew and AQIS are doing a class job with their numbers verses abbot and Co's penny pinching ways. For that alone they deserve a pat on the back for carrying on without grizzling un...

Re: Implications of socketing braces

Feathering braces to nothing at the ends allows the brace to flex a little should there be impact with the top. Taller braces being more rigid are more susceptible to damage from that same impact. The glue is crystalline, the centre of the brace is taller and often thicker and being furthermost from...

Re: Implications of socketing braces

If you don't inlet braces it's important to tapper down the ends so they feather out to nothing where they abut the linings. The thicker you leave them at that juncture the more susceptible they will be to breaking the bond with the top under impact.

If your main interest is instrument making and you don't currently have a drum sander then IMHO 'that' should probably be your priority....I say this because in lutherie and many other pursuits, you will find endless uses for a drum sander. Probably not so much a thicknesser, nice to have and all bu...

Mdf is like 30 cents a piece, takes laser 4 minutes to cut, not worth the trouble for doing all of that Just say'in Stevo, the problem you sighted with MDF was it's longevity. More specifically the quick wear of the guide's reference pin holes. A small 5c piece sized insert of some harder material ...

You could just cut a plug in the MDF, or whatever, and then re-fill with a stainless insert. :?:
