Re: My take on the Red Special
This is one of my favourite guitars, I’ve been studying it for quite a while and years of research has got me to this stage.I finished this one late 2014 and was about a two year project. A brief back ground for those not familiar with the guitar. The Red Special was Brian May from Queen’s guitar b...

Re: A strat with a twist?
Very impressive. Nice application of your professional skills and training to a totally different application. So the obvious question from the luthier community - is it totally a one-off, or could you do "bespoke bridge designs" for other interested guitar builders? I see your next career taking o...

Re: A strat with a twist?
Thanks Mark, Yes Gotoh stealth, the short ones. I'm a Dental tech by trade and make and cast things every day. Our trade is changing and is now done with a lot more digital milling and rather than metal high strength ceramics are being used. I originally wanted to mill the bridge from Zirconium, but...

A strat with a twist?
I had this Idea of making an electric with a top that only connects to the body at the very end and under the Bridge. All the controls and P/u's are only attached to the body leaving the 6 mm thick top to act as a bit of an acoustic panel. It was a bit of an experiment and has certainly shown a lot ...

Re: Red Special build
Thanks Pete , Been away on holidays . Time for the continuation . This is a close copy of the original bridge . six aluminium blocks machined at different heights to cater for the 7.25" radius , and the slots for the intonation. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa165/agghmrkermit/IMG_6279-2rs_zps2...

The fret board and neck were also being done . Fret board is made from Oak http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa165/agghmrkermit/IMG_9771rs_zpse1371975.jpg This was shaped and radiused in the usual manner and the painted black http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa165/agghmrkermit/file_zpsa5073f98.jp...

Re: Red Special build
A bit more of the build, With the top oak block in place it sits proud of the other layers , this is because the pivot point has to sit just under the top veneer layer to be in the correct spot . The layer of ply was routed away from the area and only leaves the veneer http://i199.photobucket.com/al...

Re: Red Special build
Certainly a bit of a challenge in this one Mark, love the trem but had to phone a friend to get a grip on how it worked, think I have it now. Yer it does look a bit daunting at first but if you think of it as a normal trem and then take the springs that are normally in tension, and put them on the ...

Re: My take on the Red Special
Very nice! Interesting that such a famous guitar was a 'homer'. Personally, I'm interested in what motorcycle the trem springs come from....if it's a copy of a Brit icon guitar it should really be Triumph or BSA but I can't see any oil so maybe I'm wrong.  And welcome to the madh...

Red Special build
The RS is a guitar that was built by Brian and his father with no previous experience of how a guitar should be built . It was also built with what ever could be scrounged to do the job . The materials used may not have been ideal or well suited to the job but what was clear is that they took a skil...

Re: My take on the Red Special
Thanks so much for the positive comments all.
I was fortunate to meet up with Jeff recently and see some of his lovely guitars as well.
Regarding the build photos, I'll put up a thread in the build section
Cheers Mark

Re: All Lurkers Please Read
Hi guys , well with only 5 posts since 2009 I spose I'd be a lurker too.
I build the odd electric maybe one a year , I'd like to do an acoustic but don't have the space for a decent setup .
I will put one of my builds up in the gallery section if that's ok .
Cheers Mark

Re: Spraying - what gear is everyone using?
Iwata LPH-80-124G with a 250 ml pot . Seems to be the perfect size for guitar work and being LPHV the is not much mist coming of. I use it for both 2pac and Nitro

Well I'm using some Red Box at the moment although not on guitars , To me it seems like a brittle wood more so than Red gum . Its about 1024 kg/m3 This Board was 32mm which I re sawed down the middle. The top board , the lower one is cinnamon wood http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa165/agghmrkermi...
