Re: Trouble Build

Good fix Martin. I've started using a triangular file to recrown frets I find it much faster and easier than the diamond z crown file I got from stewmac. I bought it from Bunnings and ground off edges and made them smooth, much cheaper than buying one from a luthier supply. $15 was all it cost. Wayne

Re: Gypsy jazz guitar

Thanks Martin and Wayne.
The rosette is a challenge, I've made routing templates for the channel so that's not too bad, getting the rosette to fit nicely takes a bit of finicky fiddling around.

Re: Nomad nut files

Thanks again Martin. I have taken chips out of nuts before when filling the slots so I’ll definitely wax up for the next one.

Re: Nomad nut files

Thanks Martin I'll do that, don't know why I didn't think of it, I do it to my fret saw when cutting slots and small screws so they hopefully won't break. Wayne

Re: Nomad nut files

I bought a set of those nut files off eBay for about $100, 6 files in the set I've used them quite a bit and they're still good, they do tend to bind up a bit if you go too deep. It was a few years ago and seemed expensive at the time, now it looks like I got a bargain. Wayne

Re: Mirotone 3220 buffing

I use mothers and Maguire car polish. Show car polish etc. You can get it from supercheap, autobahn Repco.
There's probably other polish you can use, but they're readily available and not that expensive. Wayne

Re: Cutaway bending

I use aluminium slats for bending, I've never had any problems with them going around the cutaway section. I'm not sure what thickness they are probably around .7mm. I have some SS slats as well but I've found them too stiff so I've never used them. Wayne

Re: Archtop Truss Rod

I stop mine near the extension joint. I make my own and they're just a single action truss rod not dual action.

Re: Selmer

Thanks Wayne.
I've only recently started using ARC and so far the guitars have sounded great. I'm a real fan of it now.
One of the two Selmers I've just started will have an ARC top, the other will be Sitka.

Re: Selmer

Thanks Martin.
You're spot on, the first one did my head in so bad I left it for 6 months then went back and finished it.
Second one wasn't nearly as bad and this one was ok. I have 2 more on the bench I've just started.

Re: straight dovetail

I'm with Alan. A mortise and tenon joint is the way to go. I've built 3 archtops with that joint and had no problems, it's a much easier joint to do than a dovetail. I also access the bolts through the jack hole with a steel rod with an allen key welded to it. Wayne

Hi Wayne. You can get 6mm x 4mm from Australian carbon fibre there's a minimum order of $30. They come in 1mt lengths. I usually buy about 20 lengths then they last for a while. Wayne

I've been speaking with Tim over the last few months while he was getting organised, although he hasn't got everything listed yet he's ready to go with most stuff. He's a great bloke and happy to help if anyone has something specific they're after. He's helped me out a few times with special orders....
