Re: kerfed lining material?

For the reasons Martin gives I use European Beech. It's fairly cheap and it is easy to find nice straight lengths without knots. It also bends well.

Re: Bridge design

Thanks Mark, I recall now he did mention the maker. And thanks for the points on bridge design. It is something I puzzled mightily over when building my fan braced classicals. I was inclined to make a somewhat shorter bridge to save weight but this would then not have intersected the next fan. In th...

Re: Nut files

I'm with Mark you should buy them and tell us about them. Slightly related - I try to always work in metric but the nut files and a lot strings are offered in thous. This can get confusing but I refuse to give in. I label my files in metric and try not to get it wrong. My worst measuring mistakes ha...

Bridge design

I was looking at a video of Mike Dawes tonight. Very skilled guitarist though I do tend to think if someone wants to play drums they should actually be a drummer! He was in an interview with Tommy Emanuel. However the guitar he was playing had a really elegant bridge design. No idea if it is an effi...

Wayne I have to say that your posts are always helpful/interesting. As to labelling - as the brain cells shrivel it is really worth noting down what each funny shaped bit of wood is actually used for when you pick it up after a few months!

OK OK I'll go out to the workshop...

I don't have a micrometer but the spring steel I'm using is a little more than 0.2 mm. As I said it is the standard product from one of the two US guitar making shops.

Re: Cutaway bending

First of all I have to say that I admire people who can bend any shape over a hot pipe. I can't! Any heat bending of timber requires support on the outside of the bend. The classic Fox bender provides this, particularly with the sprung support under the waist bend. You can find plenty of videos by t...

Reckon you were lucky to get away with that Taffy. I'm sure if I tried that I would have cracks all over the place! What is the timber.

Re: Gore plate thickness maths help

This is mainly covered in the Contemporary Acoustic ... section of this forum. There is a lot of it! And you will find that many others have struggled with this so you are not alone. I seem to remember that someone even offered a copy of their Excel spreadsheet.

Good luck Dave

Yes Wayne thanks for the effort.

Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem

I have a Jet which I think is pretty much the performax. Just to add what people have said my big deal was that the curl of the sandpaper was stopping it going into the gripping slot. Lots of straightening or use of a rule as someone said. A pair of long tweezers also helps. For ages I couldn't get ...

Re: Timber Species for Tenor Ukelele Tops

No that is really not the case. Spruce wasn't readily available in places like Spain but was actively sought out as being the best material for the job. And that is because it has the greatest stiffness to weight ratio of pretty much any timber species. That means that you can make your top lighter ...

Re: Build 12.4 - approximating B(1,1)

Yes quite Martin. That's what I have been doing for years on my Windows 8.1 machine. But when I downloaded the exact same version of VA - 9.0.6.60 - to my newish machine running Win10 this no longer works, you need to hold the CTRL key down as well. I haven't done much to this machine so can only gu...

Re: Build 12.4 - approximating B(1,1)

Joel what I say above is true of the version I have been using. However having just downloaded a copy to a new PC I discover that you need to hold the control key and the left mouse button down to select a region of the spectrum. Since the two copies seem to be the same version I'm not sure what is ...

Re: Win 10 +usb mic

Again thanks for taking so much trouble. Turns out running the sound troubleshooter was the secret. It also means that AP Tuner is working as well as VA. Result. Yes a bit of digging found Control panel which is nice. When the disaster of win 8 came out I used the big mod that someone wrote to make ...

Again to accurately measure a peak you can repeat the process to get just the peak. Note the control at the bottom that says zoom out.

If you left click on the spectrum and hold it down you should get a box which will select that part of the spectrum that is inside the box.

Win 10 +usb mic

Has anyone had success with getting a Windows 10 PC to recognize a USB microphone?

In this case I am using an Iciicle preamp and cannot persuade the PC to see it, though it works fine on a Win8.1 machine.

Well that certainly is something else! Must have been a huge amount of work with all the various bevels. And multiscale would blow my mond if I tried it - including as you say the intonation.

How did the blue gum work for the top?

Great stuff!
