Sydney bassist Brett Hirst is on tour and his electric bass is broken. Needs one for a gig this thursday Night in Cloncurry QLD. There are no shops or schools open in the areas apparently.

absolutely. hide glue is just lower grade gelatine.

the "clear" grade is almost edible!! in fact I have mistakenly taken a swig of hide glue instead of whisky on several occasions. not pleasant, but I'm still here.

cooking gelatine is the same stuff. High purity, works well. Get it at the supermarket and try it!!

got mine from LMI, or Metropolitan music, usually in a shipment of other stuff. never had a problem.

just a few more notes on how I use hide glue these days. I don't use a glue heater any more. I just prepare what I need for the day and heat it on the spot when i need it. I simply make recommendations to my clients, and then do whatever they ask. I have no problems refinishing a 150 yr old instrument, none whatsoever. It also matters to me not, the value of the instrument, a repair is simply a repair, be that on a 100 violin or 50,000 dollar violin, or cello or bass...

Your video was great. That's exactly how I apply Ubeaut to my basses, albeit a lot less attention to pore filling ang gloss, because its not a look I cherish ...

i didn't invent the technique; I heard about it ... but there is very little published information on it. it's one of those things you either have to learn by watching someone else - or experimenting!

Oh and ... I haven't "perfected" it ... but I'm getting better at it.
