Re: Does size matter?

I like the Gotoh 510's with metal buttons . Enough weight to make it almost "neck heavy ".I've also fitted wooden buttons on them but changed back to metal . Seems the extra weight really does make a big difference at the anchoring point. I'm also a fan of having the tuners pretty much in line with ...

Re: Twelve String Plan

G'day Alan, In some cases, ( Lower tuning , light guage strings etc )it would seem 12 stringers ( or 10 ) don't need any extra bracing as the tensions are probably no higher than a six. The danger here is that some time in the future ( when you're not around ) someone is going to string it up differ...

Re: Twelve String Plan

I don't have a plan for a 12 Alan , but my thread here will hopefully be of some help : http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=60 As you can see , my design included a 24.9 scale with a 13 fret neck. Not only makes it good to play but also saves a little stress on the neck. I'd also recommend mak...

Re: Smallman style armrests

G'day Jeff, I've made a number of attempts at these type of armrests. I think the John Pearse model ( available from L.M. I .) was the first I'd noticed ( Many years ago )and thought they would have to be a good idea .A bit like a chin rest on a violin !. Why go to all the trouble of getting the sou...

Re: Forum's Choice

I would suggest that you ditch the theodolite and go with a scanner. You'll need a robust laptop to be able to handle the point cloud, but I think its do-able. Mobil scanning is da bomb. G'day Lillian Great to see you about again. Scanner you say ! . Hmmmmmm,,, O.K. , I'm on it . Always helpful as ...

Re: Compensating for nutcases

Matt , I've not gone to the trouble of compensating the nut to the degree of a Buzz Feiten system ,or that described in the Gore/Gillet book. ( Thus far . ) I've merely shortened up the end of the fingerboard ( a bit more so on the bass side )bringing the nut a little closer to the first fret. Techn...

Re: Forum's Choice

Thanks Craig for your layout & thoughts it's all very useful info for me at this stage! I have seen the triple bracing layout & was thinking I'd go down this route but also I've seen Bob's double X and thought that would add strength without compromising top movement also, so it's still up in the a...

Look at that frickin' lining will ya'. It's so neat and pretty it should be on the outside of the frickin' instrument. Re: Forum's Choice

I made my bracing 10% taller than what I would on a 6 string . Virtually no weight increase . I used an Englemann soundboard as I thought it's properties would suit a 12 . You would normally leave Englemann a little thicker ( as I did ) but it depends on the qualities of the piece you are using. A s...

Re: Forum's Choice

Because youve got paired strings with big differences in string guage the ramping at the saddle is a bit more challenging than on a 6 string. If the initial saddle placement is not spot on then you can find yourself right at the edge of the saddle with the ramping on some strings. Theres a thread f...

Forgot to mention ! Also a 6 pin bridge ( saves a heap of weight and smaller footprint ) Here's the tute link : http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=354 zzas51.jpg I also went for a 13 fret 24.9 " scale . Just a little easier to play and less tension on the neck. Check it out . http://www.anzlf....

Re: French Polishing--when is enough bodying?

The old French Polisher guy I learnt from served his apprenticeship in the U.K. and only ever referred to it as a rubber. It's all I had known it as until reading an American forum. The majority of french polished American pianos I've come across all seem to have developed a crazed finish ( usually ...

WOW, Craig, that guitar is beautiful. The plug is a nice touch. Did you cut it out before bending? the grain looks perfectly matched? Thanks Nick, No ,the soundport cut-out isn't big enough to make that stopper ( it's larger than the actual soundport hole as you can see.) I hunted through all the o...
