Re: Wiring help.

Haven't had a chance to work on the switching today, but is there a right and a wrong way for the switch to be oriented? I note that there is always a shadow of the base shown, but the switch looks to be the same on both sides? Looks like I'll need to wait till tomorrow to have a go. The boss has ma...

OK, Steve. I'll do that tomorrow. When my head gets done in, I leave it for another day. Just spent the arvo at the beach with my beautiful wife sharing a bottle of the bubbly.... :)

Wiring help.

I've got a question for the electric guys. I've made a tele-style guitar, and am happy with it, but am having troubles wiring it up. I'm using a 4-way switch, and have added the ground to the cover on the neck, as described. Here's the schematic..... image.jpg The problem is, when wired up as shown,...

Ah, gotcha. Good luck. Can you suggest that he just cut smaller fret slots?

Re: Fretwork on oversized slots (plus some other curve balls

Just as a matter of curiosity, why is this fellow having you do the frets if he's done them in the past? It seems that he ought to know the best way, if it's his normal approach. Ask him....

Re: Dust Extractor Bin

Hey Graham, I don't have a photo but have seen an easy way to deal with this idea. Simply run your hose into the top, and then run another out into the dust extractor. I'd guess a baffle or filter over the outlet would help quite a bit. You know, like the foam filters on a wet/dry vac..... I suppose...

Re: finishing question

As long as we're talking Mirotone, I have a question, if I may.

Why lay down 4-5 coats and then wait a week, sand and spray all the final coats? If it burns in as well as claimed, couldn't one just spray 10 coats on day one., wait a few weeks, buff and be done?

Re: Fish Glue....never again.

Well, not to carp on the subject, but I read how the old spanish builders were all using Fish, and I made sure it was well-mixed, as per instruction, and the majority of what read was positive, even some claims it helps when one is a tun"a" de guitar. I don't want to skate around the real point of t...

Re: Fish Glue....never again.

I read lots of positive responses on a few forums regarding fish glue, so thought I would give it a go. Just like Hide glue, but longer open time, etc, etc.... Just trying to prevent anyone else from experiencing problems. ROYAL PITA! Happily, just the bindings. Oddly the top bindings are solid as r...

Fish Glue....never again.

Bought a bottle of fish glue a while back, and used it for binding on a guitar I'm working on. Stayed sweet for a month or so, but it's gotten a wee bit warm lately. 36-40 degrees. I pulled the guitar out to work on it again, and found that the bindings, oh so solid for so long, have released all ar...

Re: 12-String top radiused?

Nice guitar, Tim. Thanks for your input. And, yeah, Antes has the lower cross bar, as well as bracing that is slightly more substantial than my usual, so that ought to be OK. Also, I only put a dome of about 3mm to the top for a dread, so it's almost flat, too. I read in Kinkade's book that some fol...

Re: 12-String top radiused?

All sensible replies. I have seen reference made to not radiusing tops at various times, and wondered if there were a rationale behind 12's. I believe Antes drew from real instruments, so maybe it's particular to the one he was looking at.....I dunno...When I build one, I'll use a radius....

Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.

I'd be interested if I knew a price. It seems that there are a lot of variables, customs?, GST?, broker fees?, etc. I'm all for $20 for the OP, but it seems that the final price could blow out a bit without knowing what the extras are.....

12-String top radiused?

I'm looking thru my collection of plans and noticed that the 12-string plan by Antes calls for a flat top. I'm guessing that with the extra pressure of the 12 strings that may be to counteract that pressure? So, a question for you guys that have built 12's, would you still radius the top, or would a...

Interesting comment about the zebrawood. I've read that it is much like Indian Rosewood to work and in its tonal characteristics....Do you have a link re: the difficulties with it? I bought a chunk and have two back and side sets from it, so am interested.

Cheers,

Wow, that kind of attitude surely can't be good for business. What the hell do the sellers care what the end use is? All they want to do is make their margin. Jeez, talk about high handed....makes you wonder how they actually make a living. I, too, have bought from Tim, as well as Graeme Naughton, a...

Re: Distinctive Timbers in Tassie

I've been lookin at Distinctive Timbers for a while, and have bought a chunk off them. I was perfectly happy with them. I've also bought from Misancraftwood. Both off eBay. Both big pieces needing resawing, but both nice chunks of wood. I wouldn't pay for the DT guitar sets. They look insanely dear,...
