Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

Here are a few mould mods I made. I mentioned previously I used dominos to join feet to the mould so I can work on the top edge and the back sits above the bench. Also in the pic are the extensions I made for gluing the head and tail blocks. Once they are set I remove these. This is the third body, ...

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet

OK, I am working through my spreadsheet for intonation so might ask a few questions along the way but one way or another I am going to work it out including testing my own strings. So i hope anything I ask or write here is useful for others. Even if some is bleedingly obvious. So just to clarify the...

Re: Falcate braced classical

Yes nice mitres. I was wondering how Trevor got such clean patterns in the book and we discovered the brush trick at the course. And I thought I needed a louder speaker but all I needed was a 99 cent brush and some basic artist skills to clean up straggling tea leaves.

Re: Falcate braced classical

Well the bridge mass will lower the top freq but the bridge also adds cross grain stiffness to a classical which can raise the top freq. It will be interesting to see how it comes out.

So Marty, what's your analysis? The bridge effect is ambiguous on a classical as we have discussed previously.

Re: Semi-Hollow Sides Thickness

The CS 356 is a smaller version of the ES and is made by hollowing out a solid blank as you have done. But the sides are only about 6mm thick so you could go ahead as you have done but remove more wood and it will be lighter.
Is this an acoustic bass or will it have pickups?
Nice work on the top.

Re: Bevel up jointer planes?

Hey, I have found you need a nice stable climate with wooden planes as changes in humidity can distort the sole slightly making planing difficult. The Veritus jointer plane looks nice but can't be used on its side on a shooting board which is a shame. I've been using a veritus BU jack plane http://w...

Yep, I agree with Marty. None of the many books I have purchased are a patch on The Gilet/Gore books.

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

Yes, no, yes.

No, stuck the wood and cf together in the go bar deck, then shaped. You see in one of the pics how the epoxy has soaked into the rosewood.

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

Yep, I put some stiff plastic down in my dish then clamped them in the go bar deck with oven paper and a sheet of thin mdf. Did 3 that came out very stable.

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

A few more ideas. I had a band clamp to use for making falcate braces but i did not like how it was working as the edges opened up a bit. So I cut off some SS sheet to fit and now it works great. A couple of clamps where the braces are straight and it got perfect joins. I also used LMI white glue an...

Re: Falcate braced classical

Hi Martin, I would be interested to see if your spec graph with no back looks anything like the uncoupled top freq (with soundhole plugged) once the back is on? If so you (and we) could test your monopole mobility before closing it up and get a sense of braced top stiffness and responsivness. And pe...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

Hey, I've had problems with my phone line and had no internet for weeks. I meant to post these pictures before the meltdown. Next time you cut some scarf joints make a few of these wedges. But placing the clamping pressure square to the glue joint it won't slip and you don't need all the extra clamp...

Re: Armrest held with rare earth magnets.

I missed this one Nick but nicely done, you have solved one of the problems I was thinking about with this design. I was not sure if magnets would be strong enough through the sides. 10mm magnets sound good. And arm rests lend themselves well to all sorts of designs and curves and can be really flow...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

One thing I'll do differently on the next bodies (the one in the picture is cocobolo) is let the linings into the head block about 10mm like you would do on a violin. It will make it look neater and it will stiffen up that part of the structure. Or, it will prevent it being a weak spot. The other th...

Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4

Always in the last place you look. Ok, I had some silver ash and it bent beautifully. I bent both the cutaway and non-cutaway linings on my bender but the cutaway linings needed a lot more work to get them to fit. But with a bit of water they were soft but resisliant and never felt like breaking eve...

Gore medium SS clone #2-4

Trevor mentioned in the Gallery that the nice looking NGR guitar shown (by an outragoiusly young maker mind you )was the first clone from"The Book" I am just started making 3 clones, all medium falcate braced SS. A cocobolo cutaway, an Ovangkol cutaway and a padak cutaway. While not a clone, I am al...

Re: Keeping CF Weave in Shape

Well you better work it out soon Craig so you can show me how to do it. :D From making surfboards and cutting lots of glass I know a very steady but deliberate hand is best. And shapen scissors on a medium sanding belt or disc. The little nicks from the grit hold the fibres and stop them shooting ou...

Re: Keeping CF Weave in Shape

I think Craig is talking about cutting some mat for a bridge patch and handling it so it stays together. Good tips anyway Marty. Not sure Craig, you could cut it between a couple of plastic forms and keep it there until you glue it down. And leave it until the very last minute to cut it and drop is ...

Ah yes, the sonic superiority of the dovetail neck joint is clear to me in this picture. And that cavern under the nut is not the work of some factory slacker, its a highly efficient secret tone innovation that gives X brand guitars their unique sound (of wolf notes and dead spots.) How many of thos...

Hey Martin, nice work, only a couple of falcate classicals so far on here, Jeff was/did make one as well i think. (how is/did that one go Jeff?)
