Wow Stephen. Gobsmacking stuff. Everything ties in beautifully and has that perfect blend of 'Ooh I want to pick her up and play her' and at the same time 'This thing deserves to be encased in glass for all posterity'. I've got to say that the work that gets put out and shown on this forum from OZ, ...

I'm sure it has it's place in the recording studio for a specific sound, but I can't help feeling a little cold listening to it being played. It isn't the worst sounding acoustic I've heard, in fact I've heard far worse studio recordings of overly compressed and eq modified trad. acoustics elsewhere...

Bldi hell.....its already bad enough with the tosser next door firing up his leaf blower at 8am every Sunday morning. I'll swap you the phantom leaf-blower for both of my neighbours dogs that bark all night long. I guess I could always use that contraption for good measure if it ever came down to i...

I think it's a great scenario you've got going there, Jim. This one I'll be wanting to see alot more of. I've seen another blokes website who builds tele shaped guitars using a centre core but bent sides and kerfing. That appeals to me, but not as much as this one you got on the go. Definitely has t...

Thanks for your experience , Allen. You are 'the refinish guru !!' :) I was initially sceptical in thinking possibly the two types of Pre-cat nitro could possibly be the same product but rebadged as does happen with other things.................(just random musings) Well these two brands are like ch...

That's sensational Allen. :D True about the lack of zero fret instruments around. For me the difference and I guess the element I'm grappling with is the difference you hear in an open note or chord with a conventional nut compared to a zero nut. In reality, a struck open chord with a conventional n...

The Miritone seems to be a much clearer lacquer than the old Stylewood.Stylewood also seemed to be a bit brittle when it first came out.Like it got too hard and didn't allow for much movement of the timber underneath. Your Guitar looks fantastic and will only get better with a cut back and a few mo...

I thought I'd add an ending of sorts to this thread as to what my choice of finish was. I went with Mirotone Mirocat 3220 I also grabbe 1220 thinners and 1242 for a slower cure. So far I'm really impressed with how the mirocat works compared to the Wattyl Stylwood. Quite different with flow-out and ...

Thanks for the comprehensive rundown, Kim. Much appreciated. I use weldbond for plastic to wood as it's the preferred type for that application but have used CA when I've found the need to wick extra adhesive into certain tight areas, which is where I have found the odd darker section. What I tend t...

Thanks for the speedy responses guys. I'd just finished doing a bound Tele f-hole and found a little staining in the Qld walnut where the CA had crept up the grain a little, but considering it's such a dark timber it seems to have cleaned up with some block sanding. The shellac tip is taken on board...

Just to clarify what Martin and Kim said.............. Are you shellacing just the top and not the complete rout ? Not sure how far I need to go to safeguard the risk of staining but still maintain good CA adhesion. Shellac doesn't affect the mechanical properties of CA at all ? I'm asking because I...

I find these different techniques interesting but must confess I do my frets post fretboard glue-up onto neck. I've always preferred glue-up before radiussing and fretting for my own piece of mind. This could very well be narrow-minded thoughts on my behalf and I really should try other methods prio...

Thanks Dominic and Jack for your experiences. I'm interested in the acid-cat and curious as to your set-up when using the stuff, Jack. I'll pm you later on if you don't mind sharing some ideas on application. I trawled through past threads and found this , which I think brings Bob and Allen's perspe...

I caught up with Ray Carlton of Carlton guitars who uses the Stew-mac water-based lacquer on his builds and was impressed with how some of his builds have held up over time. Not quite the same gloss levels as nitro but seemed to be fairly hard wearing and minimal sinkback also. What I have trouble b...

I'm keen to try this water-based product out and have a few spec. builds in the pipeline I can use as test pieces. Won't try it on commissions though. I'm currently using thinners based products but I'm also wanting to familiarise myself with more eco-friendly coatings, particularly their useability...
