Re: Exporting a guitar, safest option.

I was amazed recently when I purchased an SKB classical guitar case from Amazon - a big heavy rectangular thing that weighs over 10kg - and they only charged me $45 to ship it from the US via DHL. Shows the power of being a volume purchaser of someone's product. I reckon if I wanted to ship it in th...

Interesting José Romanillos video

Not a power tool to be seen:

ps. I tried embedding the video id "mFCGX-nRaxE" between youtube tags, but that didn't seem to work:

My favourite guitar-related recording on Vimeo is Ricardo Gallen recording Bach for Naxos: https://vimeo.com/21498274. Great music, great sound, and some marvellous close-up shots of the musician's hands in action.

p.s. I forget to say that I used contact cement for attaching the cork. Strong enough for the job and doesn't penetrate into the cork and stiffen it.

Armrest held with rare earth magnets.

I recently made myself an armrest held on with rare earth magnets. It was pretty much a make-it-up-as-you-go-along sort of effort, and definitely capable of improvement, but here goes. The materials for an armrest were: 1. Ten rare earth magnets, 10mm diameter by 3mm thick. These have a pull of appr...

Old inner tubes make useful clamps

As a keen cycling family with over a dozen bikes in the garage, we have dozens of old punctured inner tubes lying around, and while casting around for what I could use to clamp some veneers in place while laminating them against the guitar body for an armrest, I thought of the inner tubes. They work...

You could try the Kris Barnett method of attachment, using rare earth magnets. Makes the armrest easily detachable if wanted:

Re: A bit of new kit for the shed

I hear you on the Jet fence, the Jet bandsaws are great in every other respect, why they put such a crappy fence on them I'll never know. I recently bought a Jet JWBS-14Q, which actually has a decent fence on it - looks quite similar to the fence in Allen's photo at the top. The bandsaw is actually...

Re: Using 3-phase tools in a home workshop?

Getting three phase installed if you don't already have it could cost anywhere from a few hundred up to $5000 or more depending your existing switchboard, space in the meter box for the additional meters, new pole lead-in if needed, etc. This article gives some ideas for using three phase equipment ...

Re: Curved frets

What's the advantage? I can only see disadvantages. You'll have to curve the saddle also. And I can't see a repair shop wanting to handle a refret or recrown when one is needed. In fact, how would you crown the frets after levelling them?

Here's a Euc. Jacksonii that we came across when cycling through South-West Western Australia about 25 years ago. This tree was still alive in spite of having been hollowed out by multiple fires over the centuries. I did hear that it came down in a storm a few years later. On the same trip I climbed...

Last time I visited my brother in Switzerland I bought myself a set of Pfeil short butt chisels. Being so short in both the handle and blade I find them very good for small delicate jobs. They're only about 150mm long including the handle. These are the chisels: http://www.pfeiltools.com/en/products...

Try these people for blades: http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/band ... ories.aspx. A friend has one of their resawing blades and it works really well. And shipping from the US on a couple of bandsaw blades shouldn't be much.
