Re: Skill sets.

I'm too green to add much, but I can say that I think finish is my weakest point and what I like least. I love building, loath finishing.

Re: DRILL PRESS

I think variable speed is a must, especially if your going to use a safety planner, as you really need to get to at least 2500rpm. Also accurate depth stop adjustment is important. The ones with a couple nuts won't cut it for accurate depth. Lastly, I know others may disagree, but a keyless chuck is...

Nice work Trent. Is that Englemann one of the Graham Hein tops you got off me?
I wish I built that quickly! No it is one from Andrew's student stash, but I have just started a neoclassical with a lutz top I got from you. So stiff the target thickness came out at 2.1mm

Re: Silky Oak Classical Parlour

Thanks for the encouraging words, I was a little worried the aesthetic was too busy with busy grain and busy colours from the shell, so appreciate the feedback. Yes, I did made my wife's engagement and wedding ring and had 3 or 4 grams of off cuts and filings floating around the house bugging me tha...

Silky Oak Classical Parlour

Hi All, Here is my 3rd guitar, which I recently strung up in the nick of time for an anniversary prezzie for my wife. It is my first solo build although; I do owe a lot of thanks to Andrew Armstrong and forum members for a lot of advice along the way. My wife has had some netball injuries over years...

Any chance of some pics of the Dremel jig Trent? No problems if Andrew would rather keep it in-house :)

Re: falcate Failure with an unexpected result

Any chance of some pics of the Dremel jig Trent? No problems if Andrew would rather keep it in-house :) I am sure Andrew wouldn't mind but I don't have a pic on my phone so will have to take one when I get back to Brisbane. The demmel is held upside down and the bit potrudes between a fence and an ...

Re: falcate Failure with an unexpected result

I know for certain that Andrew does at his school and fairly sure Matin was doing this as well. The way Andrew explained it, not all student get hopelessly addicted to lutherie  so will never have a chance to improve on their next one. The channel cut with a dremmel and a jig was to keep the t...

Corrugation/undulation in silky oak

I am nearly ready to finish to start prep'ing for finish on a guitar with northern silky oak back and sides and have found despite using a flat sanding block that I have some corrugation or undulation happening. It is most prominent on the upper bout of the back where the rays are large and near the...

Re: Neck projection error

Thanks All! I will start thinking about a wedge. Just out of curiosity why 8.5mm thick bridge, thats a little on the low side. The guitar is loosely based off the 'Torres 2' designs in Roy Courtnell's book and that is what is on those plans. I assume with such a small body, a reduced bridge height h...

Neck projection error

Hi All, I recently closed the box on a small scale classical (604mm) and while waiting for binding glue to dry and popped a straight edge on the neck and to my horror found the neck projection instead of being negative was positive with a projection at scale length of 3mm. Turns out that it doesn't ...
