Re: Blackwood and Huon Pine Baritone

Ran out of superlatives to say about your Ukes Allen, so I'll just say I LOVE your slotted headstocks, just give the Uke that extra touch of class. :cl :cl :cl Really liking the headstock inlay Allen! It looks like you've sat there with a pin and hand engraved it, then filled that with pearl. Real ...

Re: Blackwood and Huon Pine Baritone

Looking great Al.

So what is your impression of the Huon Pine now? I notice you bought some of Tim's whitebait tops so you must have found some positives in it as a top wood.

Re: Opinion's needed Huon back & sides

Hi Eric I built an all Huon Pine Hawaiian Lap Slide a few years back and it's been with a touring musician who has been using it almost nightly for the last 18 months. It sounds great. Sure it'll have a few more dents in it than something made of Blackwood or other harder timbers. Won't hurt it thou...

Re: Native Olive - Bending

Hi Alan

I've only used it in a side bender but I had no problems with it. I seem to remember that it held it's shape quite well after coming out of the mold.

Re: I have a problem with WoodRat

It'd be difficult (but not insurmountable) to turn it into a Dobro at this stage. The back braces would need to come off because the back of a dobro is flat, the soundhole is in the wrong spot on the top and the braces would need to come if it as well. I'd think it'd be easier to buy a new back and ...

Re: Suitable Tasmanian soundboards

King Billy varies so much that it is difficult to generalise about it's properties. I have about 30 sets and they vary hugely from tree to tree. The other thing to understand about King Billy is that it is usually cut into boards, not split, so there will be varying degrees of runout in it. You need...

We've done around 80 instruments on the Stewmac jig.

Works reliably and doesn't take up a lot of room.

Re: Black heart sassafras

Sassafras sounds a bit like Mahogany to my ear.

I'll concur with Allen, it's one of the easiest woods you'll ever bend.

It's selling for stupid prices in the US but it's as cheap as chips from sawmills in Tassie.

You really should get in touch with one of the builders on this forum who lives near you and play one of their guitars. And then compare it again with the Cole Clark. If you are a sound engineer you will probably have a lot of experience with acoustic guitars like Matons or Cole Clarks that are rely...

Elixirs are all I use Peter. When I was still gigging I could get 3-4 months out of a set. An uncoated set would last a couple of weeks at most. I found at places like Port Fairy that normal strings would last about a day and a half. (all those greasy hands from the food stalls next door to the Inst...

Re: Split bridge & top

G'day Frank

The split needs to be repaired with a splice, which will require a re-finish.

The bridge should be replaced. Superglue won't fix the problem.

None of the above problems looks like warranty work to me.
