Re: Sharpening very narrow chisel
Thanks both. I like the trick Nigel. I managed to get it into my Veritas honing guide - I tend to forget it as I rarely use it - so clunky. With some more work I found it was not my poor technique but the back is in an awful state. Radiused across the width and a pronounced curve lengthways. We've p...

Sharpening very narrow chisel
I have acquired a 2 mm chisel second hand, which should be useful for small mitres. I am normally a honing guide user but this obviously won't go in a guide. I can manage the bevel by hand. However the back is puzzling me. How to flatten it without rounding it over? It is pretty hard to keep it flat...

Interesting design. What is the top wood? As Martin says a very jazz feel to it.

Re: Resawing, Bandsaw drift etc
Sharpness of blade is absolutely crucial apart from anything else. Like start with a new one.
Tension has to be right and the blade guides have be set up just right.
Even then a smallish saw with a limited width of blade is always a bit problematic.

Re: Shed advice
A trick I saw somewhere on a forum was to have upright panels on wheels acting as tool racks. These can be moved around to reconfigure the space.

Re: Left Brain Lutherie Book
Are you sure there is more in that book than you would get from Trevor and Gerard's book? Though I realize it is fairly expensive too. Their book probably has far more useful information around the whole build process. I vaguely remember that he was offering a free download and after a bit of search...

Re: Soundboard shows bracing after French polishing
I think actually that this is a feature rather than a bug as we used say in my computer days. If you have built a responsive guitar which basically means a fairly thin top then the braces do tend to 'telegraph' through. As people above have suggested sanding technique can make some difference but li...

Re: Lathe based drum sander
Pat feel free. I don't think it is anything special, but if it helps others to improve their techniques then fine. Joel the drum is made from a bunch of layers of stuff that I had around in the shop. Mahogany or it's subsitutes. And of course with the lathe you have the tool to make the cylinder. It...

Re: Lathe based drum sander
I do have a full size sanding thicknesser but still like to use this lathe based one for three jobs: thicknessing bone for nuts and saddles, scalloping the end of braces, and scalloping the ends of bridges. Couple of things. The drum should be reasonably large diameter to give plenty of abrasive sur...

Re: Performax 16/32 Sander - belt tracking
I'm one of the lucky ones and have had few problems with my Jet. However what looks like a bit of bent fencing wire that they call the TUF tool I have never been able to use, so changing the abrasive is always a bit of a struggle involving tweezers and a certain amount of swearing. Partcularly if I ...

Re: Chisel set
Just for info I bought a Narex chisel some time back and it was OK though a bit soft, but a second one is quite poor. Too soft to hold an edge for long.
What I do like to do is have several versions of the most used sizes so I don't have to break of and sharpen when in the middle of a task.

Re: Growing Dalbergia Latifolia, East Indian Rosewood
Alex that's brilliant. I often wonder why more people don't plant rosewoods if they have the climate - it's not going to happen here in the UK! Why stop at a dozen? with 6 acres you could plant lots, and you clearly have worked out how to germinate the seeds. I'll leave a message to my grand nieces ...

So much detail - and that Acacia is quite magnificent.
I wonder what the neck body joint is? There doesn't seem to be room for the G&G bolt on, and you also have the strap button into the heel...?
Great stuff Dave

Re: Alternative String Attachment to Top Plate
Not quite the answer as I think you mean stiffness across the fully braced top...? However Trevor does demonstrate clearly that the cross grain stiffness of the top plate is very unimportant compared to the long grain stiffness. Can't tell you offhand where in the book this is but may have some time...

That herringbone is seriously neat. Did you have to separate down the centreline to get it round the curves?

Scarf Joint
In the recent GAL Mark French talks of working in Charles Foxes workshop. In the article I noticed Charles' jig for cutting the scarf joint in his headstocks on the bandsaw. I decided I just had to have one. I have been doing them freehand but that means a fair bit of cleaning up with a plane afterw...

Re: Collecting 4DOF models
Sorry thought I had said. It is steel string, based very closely on Trevor's design in the book for a mid sized SS. Assuming you have the book you can fairly easily work out the area since it is printed on a grid of squares. (and that takes me back a bit trying to measure the area uder curves on spe...

Re: Soundport and Weight Effects on Frequencies
Richard this may or may not be relevant... John I remember that you ended up using fairly tall falcate braces on your classicals. But I wonder what top thickness you ended up with? I have a falcate classical sitting in a corner because it turned out so dull and I am planning on thinning the top seri...
