Re: how to remove cigarett smell from and old instrument
Never heard of anyone trying to do that but good luck. My only experience is cars - lot of Japanese imports here in NZ and often they have been smokers cars. The dealers spray them with really strong perfume (which itself is a big giveaway) but the smell always comes back, and no matter how feint, i...

I usually string them up the next day. I assume that if its going to come off it will come off straight away.

Re: 12 strings 70s ibanez concord 684 with bridge issue and need some TLC
Hi again Good close tolerance mating surfaces AND pressure on the glue joint are both required. If you have some scrap ply lying around you can make a suitable C clamp. You can use wedges or a bolt to apply pressure. Or you can use a bolt through each of those two pearloid markers on the bridge. Rep...

Re: 12 strings 70s ibanez concord 684 with bridge issue and need some TLC
I had almost an identical guitar, a long time ago. Mine was a Suzuki, but same Hummingbird copy. my starting point would be ...what are the actual problems with this guitar? 1. Do the frets buzz anywhere? 2. Are they badly worn? If answers are no and no, learner, leave them frets alone. In my opinio...

Re: 1. falcate braced classical
Thanks for the reply Jurgen. Yes, pretty quiet here these days. I think the various COVID lockdowns may have meant a few more guitars got built - at least it did for me. I'm going to go back to the Second Moment of Inertia calc when I do the next top and see what I can see. I think that I will need ...

Re: Yairi Gakki repair - your advice please.
imho, fwiw, etc etc I have always been impressed by Yairi guitars. I think there was a couple of them, maybe father and son?? n They do sound great. Anyhoo, I would agree that the top has had its day (leaving it in a hot car will do that) and no rescue attempt of the existing top is likely to be suc...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
Hi John and thanks for your comments. The rosette block is one piece and I will cut slices off that and build up the rosette in the routed groove. I'll mitre the edges as I go and reverse each adjacent slice to get a nice pattern. I'll post pictures when I get there. It's a time consuming but relati...

Re: 1. falcate braced classical
Hi Jurgen, Hope all is well with you. Your guitar looks very nice. I'm building my next falcate classical now and am looking forward to the bracing design again. May I ask, did you do a bridge rotation test for this guitar and if so, what did you measure? On my guitar, I ended up getting the right f...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
Some progress made this weekend after a few nights faffing with the rosette mosaic block. Thats now done. Nearly 200 pieces of wood glued together. Decided to repeat the laminated sides, was very happy with that last time, keeps the sides nice and flat and helps get the shape a better fit to the mou...

Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
I have finally started on the second of two classical guitars using a falcate bracing system. This one will be a repeat of the last one save for any refinements I can think of on the way. I was pretty happy with the first try and its the best looking guitar I have built so far. The bracing was a suc...

I hope you aren't paying your trucker by the kilometer Possibly an extra zero there.
I would think its fine but as the feed rollers are sprung it should be ok to just wind it down onto a scrap of wood.
Good luck with the move!!

Re: Black Heart Sassafras and Spruce Classical
Main reason I did it was to make setting the action easier, which it does.
Also makes it easier to reach the frets above the 12th, according to the new owner, he likes it.

I'm a french polish (shellac) convert. Its easy, cheap, quick, convenient and cheap. Supposedly not so good for gigging guitars because of durability issues but very simple to re-finish if you have to.

Its interesting how everyone's view differs. My view...If you're a hobby builder (like me) then don't beat yourself up if you don't feel like building some or even a lot of the time. You're a free man. Go and do something else. They'll all be there waiting for you when you get the urge to build agai...

Love the greenhouse! Great idea.
Couldn't help noticing the retaining wall in the new one is leaning in...not enough support there!
Would love to see some pictures of that when you get going.

Re: Shed Building
I looked up caliche and its more likely to be too hard than too soft, so no you don't need a slab under the container. If the caliche is deep and cemented just put the container on some levelling pads. After removing the topsoil if any. I hope the site is relatively level as it sounds like it can be...

Re: Saddle position
Well if that was my first guitar....i would cut the saddle slot as close to where you have drawn it as i dare then do the best job i can with the wide saddle. It may not be perfect but i suspect it will still sound amazing. I would just let it go and try not to make the same mistake on No2. Time to ...

Re: Shed Building
Hi Lillian and congrats on the house. A full pad under the container is a waste of money unless the soil at your site is very, very weak. The total weight of the 40 foot container plus what you put in it is unlikely to exceed 12 metric tonnes or 25,000lbs. The middle supports will carry twice as muc...

Re: Nicco's Lying-Around-Timber-o-Caster
Nope Strings are NOT parallel to the fret board. They start at a very small amount over the first fret (assuming you are not using a zero fret) and pass over the 12th fret at around 2.5 to 3mm depending on which string, preference etc. You have some height adjustment at the bridge/saddles. If a conv...

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - re-shaping strat pickguard
Well produced and informative as always Robbie. Beautiful guitar. I was thinking though that I would have made a new pick guard using the original as the template for holes etc, and kept the original in case having modified it, I found I preferred the original (which I do :D :D . Purely subjective I...

Re: Still not getting the sound I want...help!!
Hi David. Im certainly no expert, but here's my advice for what its worth. The CF tow (or strand) is actually very small. I used the CF tape shown below and pulled out one strand at a time. This helps keep the rest of it tidy as each strand is made up of 3000 tiny filaments (hence 3K) and it come un...
