Thanks Tom for the detailed and considered reply.
To be clear. I am not asking what I should build, that as you state does depend on my playing style etc.
I guess what I am asking is , Building for oneself, uninfluenced by the need to sell and meet market expectations what do you guys go for.

AHH... ok Dave, I was only referring to the engineering Youngs Modulus not the Dwarf strongman Youngs modulus.

We had the difference between strength and stiffness drummed ito us at University...........a loooong time ago.

Dave White said "Calculating Youngs modulus gives a measure of strength to weight which is an important measure" I'm going to be a little pedantic here Dave, ex structural engineer here, Youngs modulus has NOTHING to do with either strength or weight. Think of it this way, laymans terms. Strength is...

MOE is stiffness Higher is better

Surprised at the results for silky oak and tassie oak
The published results for MOE (modulus of elasticity) are higher than the other species you have tried.
But then timber is a variable item, you may have some low density samples.

I guess gratay's pic is an example of why a bunya top does not appeal to me. First one I saw, my immediate reaction was -what is that flatsawn mismatched 4 piece top. Sure the sound is the critical end result, but it really does have to be pleasing to the eye as well. Fortunately everyone's take on ...

Ask a simple question?... Never realised that it would spark so much controversy. I guess my question has been answered in the negative in that no one has any experience with using celery top pine as bracing wood. I see that ALS is selling bunya and Kauri as brace wood as well as spruce. And LMI has...

How would those of you who do not like the idea of exposed fasteners on the heel feel about just having two 4mm dia holes.
I am tossing around an idea for concealing the fastening and adjusting bolts that ric's setup uses at the base of the heel with just an access hole for an allan key.

I figure that I would have to reduce the bracing width to use the denser(but stronger and stiffer) timber.
Just wondering if anyone else has tried it before. I think I have heard of it being used for soundboards somewhere.

Celery top pine bracing?

Anyone used this?
I got a couple of nice sticks a few weeks ago, nicely quartered, tight growth rings.
Wondering if I should cut it up for brace stock/

Actually Craig the forces on the the lower bolt are a lot less. James was incorrect on applying string tension to a lever arm the length of the neck. Since the strings are parallel to the neck and a maximum of 20mm above where the neck pivots on the body, and the lower bolt is about 60mm below this ...

Yeah, it has come out better than I thought it would.
The camera flash actually makes the picture look worse than in person.

And the before picture was NOT how it looked initially, the whole corner above the mold was bent over horizontal with only the cloth tape holding it together

I agree with replacing the side BUT.... The concept of this particular instrument is to do it as cheap as possible using leftover wood and I don't have a spare side plus i am intrigued to see what I can achieve with a repair. I was surprisingly calm when my wife told me what had happened, she was mo...

Where possible I go 2 thou bigger than the string guage to give clearance and avoid sticking. It is not a problem for side to side movement of the string with the round base. Most Tuning problems are the string bunding in the nut and a vee shape can create a wedging effect If you do set up for extra...
