Re: Some mandolin thoughts
Peter that's very interesting. Trying to understand what is going on. Presumably the actual frequency of the back shouldn't matter because we are not hearing it. If the node line of the main top has moved outward presumably this would suggest an effect like Trevor's extra side mass...? Perhaps the e...

Nigel I did dig out that article thinking I might be able to scan and email it to you but it is far too big. Hopefully Martin or someone else local will be able to give you a copy. John Greven certainly has some interesting ideas on improving the efficiency of the building process. I was particularl...

Thanks Martin. I will be keeping the classical to do my terrible playing on since I have got rid of most of my others.
The SS I'll have to see if anyone is interested.

And one might add that getting this geometry right is a pretty subtle process and remains one of the more difficult tasks for we beginners.

Re: Figured Maple
Thanks Fisherman. I didn't show them but my mitred purflings at the tail strip are gradually improving! And that is a good question. I keep thinking I should be doing some thinning but on this build I felt it was really such a light weight top that I didn't. It is Engelmann, taken to around 2.1 to 2...

Drawing 1 small.jpg I haven't been too productive this year but have managed to finish these two which I am very pleased with. Fronts small.jpg One is a standard Trevor Falcate steel string. A design I keep going back to since it works so well. and the other is my Torres influenced classical. Yes I...

Re: Starting out on J45
I think there is a thing going on here which we toilers in our sheds all tend to suffer from. You really don’t have to own all the machines stroke tools that are needed. There is almost certainly another woodworker near you who actually has a morticing macihine and would happily let you use it for t...

Re: Measuring and marking frets
Not quite what you asked but when marking out clamp your ruler to the board so you only zero it once, and use a magnifying glass of some sort (I have an illuminated magnifier) to help read the ruler. And don't get too worked up about it. The small errors here are probably not going to matter too much.

Disharmony in SS Guitars
This may seem a slightly odd place to put this query but bear with me. I am quite at ease with musicians playing classical style music on steel string guitars but I came across a really disturbing video tonight. I have huge respect for Michael Chapdelaine as a player but I listened to him playing Co...

Re: 8 String bocote falcate braced nylon string crossover guitar
John that does look great. Your description of the ret top is also very timely. I have a falcate braced classical I completed a while ago that is seriously dull sounding. At some point I intend to re top with far less bracing - in fact the opposite of your job and I shall certainly try your technique.

Maple or Sycamore for purfling
I am using (a quite dark brown) walnut for the first time for the body of a classical and want to use a simple white purfling that segments the back into two halves and continues under the binding which will be the same walnut as the back/sides. I had hoped to use some holly that I have in the rafte...

Re: Question re strength of different mahoganys
There are certainly big differences in density between pieces of what is described as mahogany. If it follows the general rule that stiffness correlates with density then you may well have an issue with your repair. I have worked some reclaimed mahogany from old furniture and it bears little relatio...

Re: Multiscale bridges
Mark I agree that the Lowden looks huge. As a builder I would also be concerned about the large mass. I think the point about the cutaway is also important since we have already broken the symmetry and that can be used to suggest a bridge shape. Martin's point about the headstock is also right in th...

Multiscale bridges
I was watching a couple of players on multiscale guitars recently (one of whom was Tony Mcmanus - great player if you don't know him) and the builders had just tilted a standard bridge round. I thought this really didn't look very good. And of course once you've seen it you can't help looking at it....

Re: Louro Faia for binding .. a complete failure
And of course it isn't just the bindings it's the side as well. But we persist because we like the shape and because we love the cutaway, even - actually - especially on classicals. I haven't been quite as sharp on this one but I do like it.

Trent great detailing. I imagine that scooping of the heel is to further improve access to the upper frets...?
I'm looking with envy at that armrest. I left my last classical with too sharp a corner and end up with a great crease in my forearm!

Re: How big a drumsander?
I have the Jet as with Martin.I seem to have been luckier than him (and some other builders) because it has worked well with no real problems in several years. The width is a bit limited, it will only just cope with Trevor's steel string design. Haven't tried doing a pass with part of the timber sti...
