Re: Earthquake in Japan and Tsunami
Looking at the violence of the Tsunami, I will be surprised if the the death toll doesn't go into the 10s of thousands - maybe closer to 100k. The pictures show such a mess that it will be a week or more before they even have a vague idea of how many are missing. The only good news seems to be that ...

Fantastic guitar.
Thanks for the link to Larry Robinson's site. I was blown away by his Lindisfarne project.

Re: So I need a blockplane ...
These look to be the Quangsheng planes I mentioned earlier. According to a dealer here in Germany they make slight variations for different buyers - in the UK one person sells them under the Quangsheng brand directly and in Germany its Juuma with perhaps a tiny difference in the finish. I have the b...

Re: So I need a blockplane ...
The Quangsheng chinese planes are excellent - way way better than the Anant planes. They work out of the box. They are generally sold under someone else's brand name and differ slightly from seller to seller. In Germany they sell as Juuma, in the UK under their own name and in the US I believe its W...

Re: what do you lot make of this.
Could be fedex is the problem here. I got an number of shipments from from the US via fedex and at this end (Germany) I always get hit with extra taxes because fedex refuses to read the shipping documentation. Specifically they ignore the fact that shipping is clearly listed on the invoice and then ...

It was Paul Gudelsky I was thinking of - it says he was 33 when he was killed. Car accident or murder? Not mentioned.

I enquired for Europe. While I can't compared the quality, I can get IR in Europe for less, so there is no incentive for me to try it out.

Re: Lute Progress - Test runs for cutting the rosette
Latest progress. The top has been worked to final thickness with a block plane and then scrapers. Thickness is around 1.8mm just south of the bridge and gets down to 1.3mm in the rosette area. ... I built a 10 course renaissance lute a long time ago. If memory serves it was about 1.1mm at the edges...

Re: New Website
For future reference. There are a bunch of online back-up services available which could help ensure that you won't be caught short in the future. There are generally a bunch of tricks with them that you have to watch out for - e.g. will only keep copies for for "live" disks as opposed to old disks....

Well its not microtonal but this stuff is an acquired taste too. I don't know how much help this is but there is a snapshot of the site here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.anzlf.com for two dates in July 2009 It includes images. Apologies if it has been mentioned already. Cheers, Simon p.s. it would be easy to grab it all with one of the tools that save...

Re: First build - a lute (wish me luck!!)
I built a lute a very long time ago. The main wood was a quite nicely flamed anegre (or some such spelling). The pegbox is made of this a strip of ebony along the top edges. The inside of the pegbox is black but simply died with black india ink. The neck is a (soft light) European poplar with anegre...

I guess anyone reading this thread at this point will have pretty much come to the conclusion that Erwin's books are worth the money. For anyone with residual doubts, here's my take on it. Any builder who does not have a fully tooled up workshop will save the price of the books in a a very short tim...

guitar making courses?
I searched the forum to see if there was any info about guitar making courses/workshops in NZ or Aus. Came up empty handed hence this post. I am considering a longer trip to NZ/Aus early next year from Europe. Apart from generally visiting a bit of the two countries I would not be adverse to spendin...
