Re: masking tape
Naphtha is also called lighter fluid. It's more expensive that way, but for removing adhesive, it works fine.

I missed this one too. Beautiful work, Alan. Quite a looker for a bargain set of wood!

Re: How did you get into Guitarmaking?
In 1979 or so, my son decided to take up guitar playing. He bought a Hondo Classical guitar, $39.95 at the music store, where he signed up for lessons. This was during the summer of that year. By Christmas, he was no longer interested in Classical Guitar, and was switching over to Electric, and was ...

Very clever Taffy! Good job. Now you don't have to fiddle when it's time to slot a board.

Re: Hauser Classical
It's looking quite good. Depending on the stiffness of the top, you may be a bit heavy on the bracing. Hard to say for sure, but Torres' braces were in the 7 mm x 3mm high range. Now his tops were probably a little smaller, so that could make a difference. I'm sure you are in the ballpark though. Do...

Re: Waddy's # 5, Cocobolo/Lutz Classical
Thanks. None of them are bad, I was just surprised by this one. I was playing along, and noticed that I didn't have the usual flubbed notes on bar chords. Then, when I was talking to Johnnie about the action, and how high it was, and it's within the norms, he also commented about how easy it was to ...

Re: Waddy's # 5, Cocobolo/Lutz Classical
Thanks, Lillian! It's hard to tell someone how gently he was playing on the Barrios piece. It was like he was barely tweaking the strings, except for the louder portions, but even then he was not digging in. Johnnie is a good player. Currently, he's an unemployed Civil Engineer with a second degree ...

Re: Bending Irons
I made one with replacement truck tail pipe section, inserted an electric charcoal starter and plugged it into a router speed controller, popped in a grill thermometer, and it works great. Can't post pics yet - post count, I assume. P1010574 (Large) (Small).JPG It was a size thing. The forum doesn't...

Maybe my blood pressure will go down now. I'm sure yours is better, Bob. What a mess. Sorry you had to endure such a trial. Being here is better than not, even if some stuff is missing. Congratulations on getting back this far.

What Waddy said got me thinking. His flex test showed fish glue to be extremely brittle, with some flex in LMI and HHG. Guitars do flex. So should we choose glues that can move at least a little? I wouldn't want the brace glue to shatter when I strung it up. Of course his test may not reflect behav...

I'll certainly agree with Rick on the LMI White. It is brittle in a similar way to HHG and Fish Glue, which I know he doesn't like, but when I did the drying test, the order of brittleness was Fish Glue(most brittle), LMI White, HHG. This was open air drying of glue on a plastic surface, then peeled...

Dennis, I was not talking about shrinkage of the glue line. I was talking about the glue taking on a color under finish. For instance, TBIII will show up as a separate line, with it's own color, which may or may not match your color scheme. Same with TBII, though, as I understand it, to a lesser ext...
