I'm not so sure most folks would like you giving their guitars the once over as you described. But good luck in your adventure, some good data may be acquired.

Re: Top Deflection rig
I think this approach is so important when trying to get accurate measurements.jeffhigh wrote:The jig is sitting on top of the rims right at the edge (the support surface is slightly tapered) so it does not matter what the guitar itself is sitting on.

Re: IRW???
Honestly, I would not use this wood no matter what the price. It would not doubt be eye catching when finished but not sure how reliable in terms of movement and cracking. Sound and reliability come out ahead of looks as far as I am concerned. Looks are a nice added bonus if you first have the sound...

Trevor: Thanks for that info. With the spread sheet I have just used your numbers but am starting to feel more comfort with the whole process. Thanks again and take care.

Target top thickness
Trevor: Have struggled through and managed to get Audicity for the resonant freqs. and also a spread sheet for the target top thickness. The thickness came within .002" and that is close enough for me. Now it appears to me that the target thickness may only be for falcate bracing. Do these figures ap...

Re: Is the Dreadnought dead?
I do take it to the annual local folk festival here, where a lot of blue grassers play it. They love it, but although it looks like a Martin except for the decal, they don't buy it because even though it looks like a herringbone D-28, it's not a Martin, no matter how it sounds. Not to denigrate the...

Don't own any of the Veritas tool. Well stocked with older gear. But if I was looking for planes they would be on my short list for sure. The Lee family has done a real fine job with providing desent gear in general and the Veritas gear in particular. That shave is a little gem, smallest I've ever se...

Maybe search out Mario Proulx on one of the other forums or via e-mail. Seems I remember him mentioning Black Spruce growing in his area and him using it.

Re: Silly question about mass-loading sides.
I may be wrong but the weights in Trevors book looks like hot rolled steel to me. Most likely any welding shop would have some. Maybe 1/4" by 1"or so, saw to your own lenght and drill your own holes. Fine tune with washers.

To my mind it rates behind spruce. It is hard to beat spruce for braces.

Re: Fret leveling question
Long before the Stew-Mac jig came on the market Don Teeter had a very similar rig that he pictured in his repair books. He did not use it for regular freting but rather for certain problem necks while refreting. He discovered there were certain necks, no matter how well he leveled fretboards and fre...

Re: Failed Bridge
Somogyi wrote a section in an article about bridges. Think it was in an old Frets magizine. At that time it was one of the things he did to lighten the weight of a bridge. Art Overholzer was another person who did this but with the backs and sides to get the resins out and he claimed it enabled the ...

Re: Failed Bridge
Luke: When I saw your first picture,I thought you had an ebony bridge. Quite obvious the Rosewood is a nice piece loaded wit resins. If it were me I would soak the bridge in acetone for a week or so, changing solvent when it appears dark.Be prepared for a lighter bridge both in weight and color. You...
