Re: recently closed box
Thanks for the reply Trevor. I think I'll get strings on it in the next couple of days and see how it sounds.

recently closed box
I recently closed up this guitar and it's just a few days from putting strings on. I thought I post a spectra and the bracing pattern for reference/feedback. The bracing is modeled after Jeff Elliott's work. I've built quite a few of these and they seem to work well. Any thoughts on the spectra are ...

Re: The Next Classical
I've made a Fleta off the Courtnall plans, it's my understanding though that the plan is not very representative of Fleta's instruments. It's about 7-8 years old now, Cedar top and EIR. I was very disappointed with it at first, for the first few years as a matter of fact and it didn't get played muc...

Re: Installing K&K Pure Mini help
On the last few I've done they appear to be no longer supplying the glue with the pick-ups and tell you to buy a fresh tube of the gel super glue. So I would guess that there's been issues with old super glue.

Re: Guitar Cases
While Ameritage cases are very nice they weigh a ton, several traveling player have told me just don't want to deal with the weight lugging the thing through airports and such. I'll second the recommendation above for Hiscox cases, IMO they're the sweet spot in the world of cases. Light in weight, g...

Scribe a line with a knife and rub chalk into it.

Re: Cedar bracing
Why not dimension a spruce brace to an approximate dimension that you would use, deflect it, then match the deflection with a cedar brace.
This should give a pretty good comparison of how your cedar compares to the spruce you have.

Re: Confused on this frequecy response
Thanks Trevor. That's another piece of the puzzle trying to figure this out. I don't think I could tell a T(1,1)2 Chladni pattern from a T(1,1)3 as they're both monopoles. What clues give it away?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Confused on this frequecy response
As I was trying organize some notes and photos of this guitar this evening I came across a photo of some Chladni test i did a while back on this guitar and remembered that Martin and Trevor asked if I had done any testing.
I thought I'd post the photo.

Re: Confused on this frequecy response
Trevor, thanks so much. It appears to be a very high mobility top also. It deflects approx. .0075 inches at the bridge with a 2.5 lb load (I really need to accurately confirm the weight though), giving me something like 18 X 10 -3 s/kg using a main top frequency of 174 Hz, or 21 X10-3 s/kg at 198 Hz...

Re: Confused on this frequecy response
Ok, so it appears that I made my back a lower main frequency than my top. The frequency responses below lead me to this conclusion. The fist graph shows the back with the sound hole plugged as was suggested by Martin, and the uncoupled back is setting at 183.3. I then took Trevors advice ( I think) ...

Confused on this frequecy response
I just completed a guitar the other day and took some impulse response data of it using VA. The first graph shows the main air, top and back response ( I think). The second graph shows the top with the sound hole block by a foam plug. I blocked the sound hole because I was wondering what the 174 Hz ...

Unfortunately I've had to deal with one of these too. I repaired as Joel describes above, A little care and careful picking of the wood it'll come out flawless.
Good luck with that.

Re: Reliable Hygrometer Calibration for the Luthier
I recently went through this and obtaining the salts difficult for me, with the exception of NaCl. So I ended up using dry bulb and wet bulb readings, not quite as accurate I'm sure but pretty darn close. I have a long lab thermometer that's easy to read. I wrote down the ambient temperature, I then...

Re: peculiar 168 hz in tap response
Martin, This guitar is based on a Byers dual fan system, a type of lattice.
I wonder if this is part of what accounts for the volume in lattice guitar?

Both piece are played by Greg BTW. Night in the ghetto.mp3 And I almost forgot the spectrograph hr tap respo...

Re: peculiar 168 hz in tap response
All right I'd thought I'd try to update this. I was able to grab a speaker for checking the Chladni patterns at our local thrift store today. A KEF model 102 reference speaker for $3 ! I'm reattaching the spectrograph from the first post that is from this guitar just to make it easier for people if ...

Re: peculiar 168 hz in tap response
I agree, something is not stable. I can get different reading depending on mic position. I'll see if I can borrow a mic from someone and get my same readings. I did check my background and there a lot of general noise, lights, computer ect... pretty quiet, but they're still there.

Re: peculiar 168 hz in tap response
Ok, so I tried this again a couple of different ways. Concerning Visual Analyser it's labeled 2011 and I have the FFT sample size set to 16384 with a sampling rate of 11025 hz. This guitar that I'm re-tapping is the first graph shown in my original post. In this graph the guitar is tapped with the s...
