Re: detached bridge

I was chatting to a luthier friend today (who sells lots of guitars) and mentioned your problem. He advised finding a luthier local to where the guitar is and getting him/her to fix it. Cheaper than cartage back and forth, most likely. Not ideal but more economical. For what its worth (amateur build...

Re: Paulownia Acoustic Top

No idea sorry Matt. Assume you have googled other resources??. I think the lack of response here indicates either no-one has done it or no one would want to. Personally id thin the top wood, before joining it, to something like 5mm and tap it. If it sounds ok experiment going thinner. Once it goes a...

Re: detached bridge

Hi Jurgen Sorry to hear about the bridge. Q1. How did you prepare the soundboard and bridge for glueing? Do you mask out the soundboard before finishing the top or do you scrape back the finish to bare wood afterwards? Q2. Are those wood fibres stuck to the underside of the bridge? Strange that they...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

Thanks Dave, now you come to mention it i do recall it. Ill go and have a look. Whether i carry on with falcate braces or not the process in the books and the ability to assess what you are doing as you go is the game changer. I definitely dont understand it all but i understand a lot more thsn i di...

Re: How useful is the CF under the brace?

Martin, you are probably thinking of section 4.4.6.1, where Trevor discusses the efficacy of putting the CF at the top and bottom of the brace - like an I beam. To quote the opening paragraph, the stiff material should be placed as far from the neutral axis as possible... and uses the example of rei...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

Tonight's efforts went into some bridge rotation checks and a first attempt to measure stiffness of my No.8 guitar. Ill get to No.12 tomorrow night hopefully. No.2 bridge rotation check. Unsurprisingly it only rotated 0.5 degrees. This was the first real guitar I built, from a kit so I had no idea r...

Re: How useful is the CF under the brace?

Isn't there an analogy with an I girder? I have 2x falcate braced steel string OMs in my workshop where there is no CF under the falcate braces, but CF on top only. Braces were glued to soundboard with titebond. Everything else on these guitars is the same. After 2 years there is no discernible dif...

How useful is the CF under the brace?

Going through my composite section spreadsheet looking at bracing sizes to get my EI value for the next classical guitar down to a better value, I was struck by the fact that the CF between the brace and the top is so close to the neutral axis as to have very little, I would say insignificant, effec...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

Apologies for the length of this next post but I'm hoping by thinking out loud, I might get some valuable input from others who have gone before me. I've got a limited supply of good tops so most of this is about trying not to waste making silly or avoidable mistakes. If you're not interested in fal...

The guitar build is looking great. The neck design with no heal will be an asset for playing at the body joint.

Re: Specific mobility

I have spent some time measuring the specific mobility of some of my builds How do you measure monopole mobility ? Exactly as in the books? I have the feeling that I struggled a bit with some units there. I will have to check some guitars again. Thanks! :-) A timely question! I'm about to check som...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

Well, I can think of one way to find out.... The sides are infinitely stiffer than the top as they are both laminated twice the thickness and heavily curved. So that top lining is your method of "clamping" the edges to the very stiff sides, thereby "fixing" the edge of the vibrating plate. This will...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

Love your super thick linings John, that should give a real sturdy rim for the soundboard to vibrate off, how big are they? They look 10mm wide and 25mm deep. Have you thought about using cocktail stick instead of panel pins to line up your fretboard? You won’t have to worry about removal afterward...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

It is fun to see the progress of your guitar. I am interested in the neck joint. I use Belleville washers to help keep the bolts tight. I like them more than a combination of a flat washer and a lock washer. A Belleville washer can stay tight through an expansion-contraction cycle. Other washers ca...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)

Time for a bit of an update on this one. There has been progress albeit glacial. At the end of last year I glued the side laminates together and clamped them in the mould to set. That turned out pretty well and much better than my previous attempts, no significant gaps. I took a lot more time to get...

Re: This level of confidence is scary

I would have my heart in my mouth a few times if I did what he did, but then he's probably been doing it that way for many years. Using the tools he does is probably much quicker than faffing around setting up machines to avoid a pucker factor or two. I would have said that's just normal white glue ...

Re: Resawing in/near Auckland

You would need a proper sawmill for that if you want your pieces 500 wide. I think the one at Matakana still has the mill there but last time i passed, it looked like they have shut up shop. Worth a try maybe. Otherwise try Cypress sawmill at Waitoki. If you want the laminates for guitars then its m...
