Re: Electric Bass Timbers
Ok, I'll bite. I am referring to the tone, the peaks and dips in frequency response, not the overall sound. Scroll down to the clip in the comments on the link you provided which shows the frequency response of various woods on a spectrum analyser, it shows a clear and audible difference. I will exp...

Re: Electric Bass Timbers
Hi Mat, I worked for Chris Kinman many year back, he used hoop pine for strat / tele bodies with no problems due to softness. The hoop pine was hard enough to take the neck plate and trem screws without compressing, perhaps Chris chose higher density pine, they were always fairly heavy. Bunya pine h...

Re: Elsie-May dread cutaway build
This is the easiest method I have used. A light cardboard cone supported by a roll of wadding. It is a few mm wider than the sound hole and just pops into place. Has the advantage of being quick to remove when sanding and the back spray seems to coat the sound hole edge better.

Re: What doesn't epoxy stick to ?
I've found epoxy won't stick to clear packaging tape. Simply apply it to your mold or cauls, you could wax over it if concerned but I've never had a problem with the amount of epoxy that will bleed through the outer veneers of a laminated side or back.

Re: bote cote
The first time I used Bote Cote I thought I had made a mistake as it had not gelled after a few hours. Turned out it just has a different cure cycle than epoxies I had used before. The temperature can make a massive difference, a 10 degree variation from lab conditions (25 degrees ) will double / ha...

Re: Antique guitar
There is no evidence of it having steel strings fitted but I don't have the bridge or nut. There was never much holding it together after the rebates for binding / purfling had been cut. Thanks Jeff, I will post a photo on the classical site and let the customer know of your interest.

Antique guitar
Hi all, this beautiful guitar came in recently for repair. It is dated 1852 and has some penciled script that I cannot make out, possibly not English. The top seems to be spruce the back and sides are BRW laminated to maple. The neck may be Spanish cedar with an ebony fretboard and solid frets. Sadl...

Re: 1985 Takamine EN 20 Jumbo.
Once a customer returned a guitar custom made for him with a totally smashed top saying he had put it down at a party and someone stood on it. I later heard from his mate that the girl friend found him in the embrace of another and used the guitar to deliver a headache.

Re: substitute adhesive for plastic binding
The best glues are acetone type that melt / soften the plastic and will affect the nitro. I have had success masking the lacquer with fine line tape, painful but it works. Might be worth testing some epoxy on the binding and waxing the lacquer. Be wary of any tapes on nitro, they can leave an impres...

Re: 1985 Takamine EN 20 Jumbo.
I re-topped an EN10 may years ago that had split across the grain due to extreme run out. From memory the bindings and rosette were brown and cream plastic, so I retrieved and re fitted them. It's not as difficult as it sounds, the plastic peels off the wood fairly easily. Though I wouldn't be crazy...

Re: maton square head truss rod adjuster
I think they are 1/4", have just silver soldered a 1/4" drive socket to a rod for adjustment through the tail block or put a 5mm socket reversed on an allen key for soundhole adjustment.

Re: Lightweight headstock
Gotoh also make a range of light bass tuners in traditional styles. Perhaps consider ditching the headstock altogether, my own bass is a 30" headless, perfect balance even when seated, a great lounge bass. I am a metal worker so the hardware wasn't a problem but parts are available. Lighter woods in...

The Feast Watson stain work really well and gives a true black (many pigments I have tried are slightly grey)

Re: What to charge ?
In Brisbane it starts at 150 for pro level work (some charge a lot more). For that money the customer should get a complete service ie. buffed out frets (including ends), oil f/board, check everything is tight (pots, m/heads, socket, buttons), full set up, clean / polish. It all takes time, plus the...

Hi Jim,
Just had a look and listen to your lounge guitar in the gallery, great job, sounds fantastic. I'd be interested in your thoughts on the tornavos and design of the tilt neck, is there any other info available?

I actually had 7.2mm height for braces in the spread sheet for a total result of ~ 46.6 Nm^2 (too late to edit)

Re: Bridge torque v flexural rigidity
Hi Jim, Wow you're keen, all that by hand! I have never used spread sheets but it didn't take long to learn (though I'm not sure if the equations are working correctly), you can download open office free. The great advantage is being able to plug in different variables and see the result immediately...

Re: Bridge torque v flexural rigidity
Hi Jim, Thanks for joining, great avatar mate! The more I look at the variables required to predict an EI for different torques for the entire soundboard the more complicated it becomes. I am sure you would have to consider the balance of the structure, the length of the active part and bridge posit...

Re: Bridge torque v flexural rigidity
Hi Trevor, Thanks for the reply. Yes, sorry, EI (flexural rigidity) is what I am asking about. The question is, how would you relate bridge torque to EI for an instrument with significantly higher torque, say a 12 string or lower torque, say a uke to result in around 2 degree rotation? I would guess...
