Re: Double bass resto/repair
Looks like as respectable a repair as you'd hope for on a bass like that! Aligning the overhangs is a lot easier of you place the bass top upside down on some trestles, then fit the body over it. You can see the overhangs clearly and adjust the clamps all around till its right. Then loosen a few cla...

Sydney bassist Brett Hirst is on tour and his electric bass is broken. Needs one for a gig this thursday Night in Cloncurry QLD. There are no shops or schools open in the areas apparently.
Can anyone help? Know a player or a teacher or luthier in the area?
Brett is one of the best.
MSG me ASAP.

Re: The big difference between amateur and pro luthiers
I would have though that the difference between amateur and pro is simply that if you are able to sell what you make, for a reasonable price, you are a pro. Being a master luthier is another thing altogether and involves vision, originality, and a certain generosity of spirit. A friend of mine said ...

Re: Glue ?¿?
absolutely. hide glue is just lower grade gelatine.mickeyj4j wrote: Are you serious?¿?
the "clear" grade is almost edible!! in fact I have mistakenly taken a swig of hide glue instead of whisky on several occasions. not pleasant, but I'm still here.

useful to look at the consistency as it runs off the brush.
(and Allen I agree with you about gram strength - I just get 192 cos it works for me and I'm used to it ...)

Re: Glue ?¿?
just a few more notes on how I use hide glue these days. I don't use a glue heater any more. I just prepare what I need for the day and heat it on the spot when i need it. This way it doesn't thicken in the pot, or go dry when i'm not watching, or overheat. I grind the granules like raw sugar in an ...

you don't need to take the back off a violin to put a decal inside LOL! He must have been doing a bit of "busywork" there ...simso wrote: I even know a repairer here who 60 plus years ago worked in a music store and there job was to take the backs of violins and put strad decals inside.

Re: Double Bass corner restoration
I should add that the client was rather shocked when I gave them my initial estimate of repair costsbecause it would've added well over a thousand dollars to their new purchase and they were already maxed out. But with an appraisal of the instrument worth far more than they thought, suddenly that co...

Re: Double Bass corner restoration
it's not a derail markus, it's a good topic. Consider the old black cello that was brought in, seriously cracked, unplayable, painted purfling, worm damage, sunken top, dodgy neck and scroll. Rather ugly in fact. No label. Owner wanted a quick setup and cracks glued. First reaction was that it would...

Re: Double Bass corner restoration
Nick, the thing is, who is the expert. The guy running a repair shop, the shop owner, the current manufacturer, Some guy running an Internet blog, a critic, or the owner, there are so many want to be experts out there, and even among the real experts IMO there's always a difference of opinion, so I...

Re: Double Bass corner restoration
Im not knocking your work either, steve, those jobs look really clean. I don't think we're talking about the same sort of thing. A decent sprayed sunburst finish on a broken Chinese-made student cello, that may or may not have had a similar finish originally is one thing. But my point was that you d...

Re: Double Bass corner restoration
I simply make recommendations to my clients, and then do whatever they ask. I have no problems refinishing a 150 yr old instrument, none whatsoever. It also matters to me not, the value of the instrument, a repair is simply a repair, be that on a 100 violin or 50,000 dollar violin, or cello or bass...

You said "so far so good" ... how confident are you that it is better in the long run that ubeaut HS? And why?
Your video was great. That's exactly how I apply Ubeaut to my basses, albeit a lot less attention to pore filling ang gloss, because its not a look I cherish ...
