Re: When will Gore/Gilet books be back in stock?

Well done. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say we are grateful for the effort in producing a second edition.

It also looks like a serious logistics exercise. Don't do your back in again!

Cheers dave

Re: Completely traditional looking Hauser style classical guitar

John thanks (once again) for a detailed build thread. As Seeaxe said there is always a detail here or there which helps us all. The pencil mill grinder you mention is by the look of it a plug in for a dremel type tool? I'll admit I seem to make a bit of a meal of cutting notches for braces in lining...

Router cutter for binding channel

I use the LMI router cutter with bearings for cutting rebates for binding and purfling. I did my current build today and it has given me a bit of a rough finish. This with relatively wide grain Sitka on the top with maple back. It isn't terrible - can be cleaned up but I wonder how often people shar...

Strings touching headstock slot edge

In my headstock design for classicals I find that the third and fourth string tend to touch the corner of the slots on the way to the tuner roller. This is particularly so if I wind in such a way as to reduce the angle from the nut to the roller. Do people think this is a problem? I ask because I ha...

Lathe Drum sander

Those of us lucky enough to have a lathe can make a different version of the sanding drum plus fence on a pillar drill tool that many guitar builders use. This is a simple box fixed to the lathe bed, with a hinged bed that is supported by bolts to adjust the thickness, with a cylinder turned on the ...

Re: Stephanie Jones

Richard thanks a lot for that. She is really good. I loved her Bach. Her technique is so good that she can concentrate on the structure of the piece, and to my ears at least played it wonderfully. Reliable playing sounds a bit pedestrian but for pieces like that I think that's what you really need t...

Graham you've been busy!

Working with ancient wood like that must be a bit of a thrill.
Is the black line in the heel an inlay or part of the lamination? There has to be scope for some decorative work round there for the more playful instruments.

Re: First Archtop

Lovely looking guitar Martin. I am always struck by the big scratch plates put on archtops. Does the playing style really need them? This is a completely innocent question, I know nothing about the playing of (presumably jazz) guitarists. It just sometimes seems a pity to obscure one of those rather...

Re: Body neck geometry

John that is really useful. We obviously go through similar issues. In the last (SS) build I ended up having to taper the fretboard like a classical having had to sort the angle out with the tenon. I have been reluctant to do too much to the top of sides/linings after having sanded the body in the r...

Re: Body neck geometry

John thanks, as soon as you say it it is obvious that's the way to go.

Do you in your falcate builds (and I often seem to be following along behind you on these) do much flattening of the top of the sides as well?

Body neck geometry

I have struggled with earlier builds to get the right angle between the neck and the upper bout right, leading to the correct height at the saddle. I am now working on a cutaway 12 fret join and am trying to get it right this time. I have too great an angle at the moment with the position at the sad...

Re: Avodire modified Dreadnought

Graham that is really good looking. I like the way you have used the Gidgee in it's natural colours including the bridge. I haven't come across Avodire - not seen it for sale here in the UK. It's good looking stuff, a ripple style that is quite different from the figured Maple that I have been worki...

Re: Glue used on a 1960's Japanese? archtop

There is a glue sold under the brand name of Cascamite in the UK. All I can see is it is described as a 'powdered resin' glue. It is comes as a dry powder which is mixed with water. It was very popular with hobbyists a few year back. Reckoned to be good for external work. A possibility for your stuf...

Re: Cocobolo classical

Wayne that looks dead smart. Is it your own outline or is it based on one of the classics? it looks subtly different. I notice that you seem to have a big change in height on the saddle between base and treble. Did you feel that you got the playability/action right? I still struggle to get this geom...

Re: Spraying - what gear is everyone using?

I am using a Fuji Mini Mite 3 which was recommended by the American magazine Fine Woodworking a while back, with their T70 spray gun. It is a HVLP turbine. This seems to work fine. It is however very noisy! They do a silenced version called I think Q3 Gold but this is about 50 % more money in the UK...

Suspiciously high Youngs Modulus

I have been tap testing some Sitka spruce and get the results below. The long grain stiffness seems very high. Is a figure this big likely? I have repeated the tests many times with consistent results.

Thanks for documenting this John. Some interesting methods of work. That trick for getting the rosette thicknessed is neat. I suspect it is a technique one might use elsewhere. I have just acquired the same thickness sander and it certainly helps with lots of things other than thicknessing the plate...

Re: Another approach to the quick and dirty intonation method.

I don't think you should feel too bad Deems. That seems a pretty obscure thing for the software tuner to do. What I do like the look of is your version of the intonator. I didn't like the price from (was it ) LMI and your version looks relatively easy to build. Also a good fit to the curved string p...

Re: 12 vs 14 fret neck join. What is your experience.

Deems yes I have gone through this loop and I simply don't know enough to form an opinion. I notice that the pretty much universal standard for classical at 650 mm is around 25.6 inches so that would be moving in the right direction. But maybe there are good reasons for not going to a longer scale l...

Re: 12 vs 14 fret neck join. What is your experience.

I realise this is a slightly old topic but I don't think we have really bottomed it out. If a player is saying to you that she really wants a 14 fret body joint (plus a cutaway) is there a good way to do this and still give a great sounding guitar.P I'm thinking in terms of falcate bracing here. In ...
