Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - Glu Boost Gel for inlay work
Hi Trent, I got mine from Southern Tonewoods. Some years ago. I found that it worked out pretty expensive for me, being a low-volume repair shop, the glue went hard in the bottles before getting a third of the way down within a year. I stored unopened bottles in the fridge and once opened I kept the...

Re: Guitar Neck Angle Sanding Jig
Hi Wayne, wow that's a really classy, professional-looking system you have there. Much more refined than the one I developed and have used for the last 10 years. It works much the same as you describe. I use two locating pins that fit into the rod slot of the neck. To adjust the angle I rotate the s...

Re: Guitar hanger for finishing
Hi, I seem to have a collection of old fan stands due to the fans failing far too easily and often. Well, what do you expect for $15.00?
Anyway, this took less than ten minutes to make. I can't see it being over-engineered, maybe just to make it more stable.

Re: Triple 0 in Blackhearted Sassafras and Bunya Pine
Hi Bob, wow, that back sure is fancy, I like it. I started a 000 yesterday and put an inlay strip in the back. I won't show it as the New Guinee Rosewood I'm using is so lacking in figure after seeing your back.
What finish do you use Bob?

Re: Interesting hand saws
I saw, [no pun intended] this thread come back from the past, and as I'm still playing catch-up since my return to the forum, I thought this contribution might be interesting. Back in the day I acquired many saws whilst looking for the right one for fret slots, and wrecked a few trying the change th...

Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem
Hi, Frank, your earlier comments are spot on and are in line with my findings and experience. So today I fitted a new/used paper. I moved the clamping assembly so that the opening sat under the slot, using the aforementioned long screwdriver. Whilst keeping pressure I pushed approximately 100 mm of ...

Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem
Hi again, well I might be a bit early making any (positive) comments, but, using ideas gained from this thread I did the following. I put extra force on the clamping lever and, as I said before, moved the whole assembly so it sat directly under the slot in the drum. I could not see any way the paper...

Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem
Ha-ah, :o on looking more closely I figured something had moved. The black mark I remembered was the location of the actuating lever, back in the day. So I tried, with the help of a big screwdriver, to move the locking device and the whole chrome assembly, back to that mark, and it all moved back. I...

Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem
Hi guys, thanks for the quick replies. Looking at your photos and comment had me losing sleep last night, so up at 5 am and into the workshop. On checking, I notice that the clamping device on my drum is nowhere near the slot. There is nothing. In the photo, I show the slot, a black marker, which is...

Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem
Hi, sorry to resurrect this old post, but in my searches for a solution I keep landing here. Over the years I have been gluing the righthand side of the paper to the drum of my Carbatec sander as I could never find the clamping mechanism. Not good but it seemed to work. As I wanted to start using a ...

Re: Pore fill question
Hi, I tried mixing up a sludge of wood dust [very fine from sanding the endgrain] and shellac, and working it into the pores. Worked ok, but I lost my sample piece so I'll try again.

Re: Carbon fiber Nut n saddle
Hi, I have strung up this old 12-string guitar using the original brass nut, and have to agree with Alan's comment above, it does not add any more of a bright sound than do the frets when playing up the neck. No difference that I can hear. 1-IMG_0096.JPG :o I know, I know the strings are too low in ...

Re: Machiche Fingerboards on Special at Stewmac
Hi, that's unbelievably quick. I gave up ordering from Stumac unless it's unavoidable due to the freight costs. I should have joined their member's freight scheme some time ago. Having free-ish freight would make their random discount offers more attractive.

New Guitar Story..
The Pacific. TD18 As with many of the guitars I build this one is to commemorate something special in the owner’s life. This guitar name The Pacific, it is not only a name of a gold mine in my district, as are all my guitars, but it has a link [loosely] to the Pacific Ocean. Hence the nautical-theme...

Hi, I have decided to switch to a French Polish finish, before nitro kills me, on my instruments. I clicked on the link in your post and it took me to where I left off watching that series. I did not realise it was the same guy, I agree with your comments about him, easy to watch. I did french polis...

More binding tools...
Hi, I thought I would show how I repurposed some tool parts, giving them a new lease on life. Some materials are often too small to go through my thickness sander, so one of these will always do the job. Mainly binding but other uses when undertaking varied repair jobs. The tool that looks like the ...

Re: Silver Quandong & Southern Blue Gum Multiscale
Hi, Nice looking build there, I have some boards of Quondong and always wondered what it looked like sliced up. I'm finishing a guitar that's taken 3 years to finish - nearly, kept having to leave it for commission builds.

Hi, thanks for your comments guys. I forgot to mention that the bridge is made of timber from the owner's property, out Winton Queensland way, and is called Emu Apple. I liked the two-tone effect. Here is a better photo of the bridge, the rosette, and the "wombat" pickguard.

The Helen Songer Parlor guitar. The Guitar This guitar story has an unusual start and an incredibly sad ending. This guitar is called the Hellen Songer, at the request of the customer. The sides are New Guinee Rosewood, and the back is Walnut cut from a rifle stock blank that his wife had bought for...
