Craig, I suppose it sounds better. The songs that I know he uses them (11 stringers) such as Oceans are in open C tuning(high-ECGCGC-low). There are 2 Gs so maybe the 2 high Gs screw each other up. Not sure. If I had a 12 I could do the experiment myself. But while I have you here, can you point me ...

Hey Martin, I have been getting into playing Oceans by John Butler and i absolutley must have/need an 11 string guitar now.

Where did you get your plans from and/or what are good plans for a 12 string.

Looks like you are nearly up to stringing it up. Let us know how it sounds.

Cheers

Kim, the fan is a centrifical fan so is good with back pressure and is 200watts. You can see it above the door in the photo. The spray shop guy told me that using positive pressure was better than sucking the air out because sucking it leaves spots of dead air. I can feel the draft on my legs in the...

Hey, Before Xmas i am complaining about dust and mentioned installing better dust extraction. I was also wanting to create a decent finishing room. Well this job turned out to be bigger than ben hur. What I ended up with is pretty cool. I had this dusty dark space under the house which you can see i...

I am sorry everyone if i have helped stall this deal. If I think about it, it was when Bob mentioned that we would be competing with Gibson and a bunch of US luthiers for this stuff that got me wondering where an order from a bunch of antipodeans would be on the priority list. I was just worrying th...

As Martin says. Doing the purfling first would mean taking a pretty deep cut into the top in one go. Seems better to do it a bit at a time. So binding first then purfling. The bearing kit i got has a spacer to lower the bearing down a bit so it clears the binding channel when doing the purfling. I u...

There is a little fibre glass shop here in Canberra. I bought a couple of 6m lenghts of 6mm and some 10mm for really heavy stuff. Rubber stops and tape on the ends. I also sprayed them with a coat of clear finish to help reduce fibre glass splinters. I also filed a couple of angled flats on the top ...

Bob, I am kind of thinking along your lines there. In my conversation with Scott Wise I asked what the quality would be like of his sets for $AUS55 if we bought 100. He said this about the quality. Dom, For small order lots of B grade wood such as I sent you, I try and meet colour, grain etc criteri...

Martin, I have not tried binding my finger boards yet. I suppose I was bulking at the amount of hassle involved trimming the fret ends etc. Looks good though and takes a guitar up to that next level I think. Let us know how it goes.

This thread started out like a bunch of pissed mates doing the "I love you mate" thing but as soon as they woke up in the US it went straight into the sewer. So what about we just call our american friends seppos like in my old surfing days and be done with it. Translation (rhyming slang) american =...

Yeh this has been great since I’ve been here. Good ozzie easy going spirit. When its about sharing and using combined wisdom to arrive at better designs or ideas, such as the virtual development of the adjustable neck recently, the internet is working at its utopian best. Used this way the art of ...

There are fixes for this kind of stuff depending on what type of bridge. It probably pivots on two screws. Maybe the screws are too tight. You can clean up the pivot points really carefully to make sure there is no burr with a file and check for wear on the screws. The bridge should pivot on sharp e...

I've done some stinky jobs before. I worked for the CSIRO doing experiments on sheep and we used to have to go to the abattoir a lot and collect bits. I won't go into too much detail but we weren't collecting lamb chops  . Could handle all that that place could serve up. Even the blood and bo...

Hey, just on a whim i emailed Scott Wise, a WA luthier wood supplier and told him what we were doing and asked him if he could do a deal like that. Here is what he said. Thanks Graham, I found a small wax heater which does the job. About 20bucks.

But, I can't stand the smell and can't use it. I am using ubeaut pellets. Does the LMI stuff smell any better?

OK, It seems we will have enough to split the order up.

I will do the coordination for the NSW ACT if no one objects.

Why don't people from ACT/NSW pm me with your numbers so i have a record and we can then give Bob a total number for here.

Thanks Bob, I like the idea of having a stash for experiments. And I am feeling motivated by the article in the latest acoutic guitar mag titled the future of tone wood. I could easily get 10 or even 20. Unless we can get a decent further discount it may be worth anyone wanting 10+ to order their ow...

Two john's

Hi, I went to see John Williams and John Etheridge play in Canberra last night. It was a great night. I play a lot and make guitars so there was plenty to watch. I didn't know whether I should be watching the fingerwork or the fingerboard if you know what I mean. One interesting bit was John Etherid...
