Fit a higher than specified lower cross brace and complete the box. Tap test and see where the main back frequency sits and trim (down) if necessary by scalloping.

Re: Any solutions for over-sanding live back (I follow the Gore/Gilet design books)?
Without thinking too hard about this if you've gone a bit thin on your back then try making the lower cross brace higher than specified in The Books to increase stiffness and raise T1 (1,3) peak. If frequency peak ends up too high you still have the option of lowering it by scalloping out central se...

Re: Exotic Rosewoods availability in AUS. CITIES?
I think the driver for Stewmac and others not exporting CITES listed woods outside US is the time and effort required to complete the paperwork. If it were me I don't think I could be blowed either.....I've just spent a couple of weeks trying to get a working with children clearance application in v...

Re: Exotic Rosewoods availability in AUS. CITIES?
I know Aaron was able to purchase and import a vast supply of Fijian Mahogany and was able to work through all the paperwork requirements to successfully achieve this order. 'Fenech' Guitars are certainly benefiting with this supply of Mahogany. As far as I know Fijian Mahogany isn't considered end...

Re: Scarf joint and nut compensation
Re nut compensation. When I don't compensate individual strings I shorten end of fretboard by 0.3mm.
If you want to get into the nitty gritty of compensation at both ends of the fretboard Id get a hold of Gore and Gilets Books. Trevor clearly lays out all the options for nut compensation.

Re: Guitar making book for HSC Students
So, OM plans come with book? All the students so far wanted to make Dreadnought. I suppose the book works for Dreadnought just as well, provided good plans are sourced? It shouldn't be hard sourcing dreadnought drawings. Making up your own set isn't that hard. Andrew Armstrong at Guitar templates c...

Re: Neck bolt drilling jig
A few different bolt on set ups. In terms of strength and low risk of failure I like Trevor's method with the bolts screwing into a brass square bar set into the heel block..but a chisel mortiser is required to drill the hole for the bar. Inserts in the heel block.....risk of the inserts pulling out...

Re: Guitar making book for HSC Students
Thanks for your replies. I'll check out the Kincead Book. The School is looking a buying a book for students use so I probably will recommend it to them. What would be a good source for a set of Dreadnought plans? I just had quick check of my copy. Plans are somewhere else in the workshop but I'm p...

Re: Guitar making book for HSC Students
I have just started mentoring an HSC student making an acoustic guitar as HSC major work. This is my third time doing this. I have previously used the Gore/Gillet book however I am starting to feel that there 'the book' is at too high a level for the average student. They typically don't seem to be...

Re: Neck bolt drilling jig
I've been drilling mine with no jigs for about 14 years. I drill the neck block holes in the drill press when I make it. When the neck is ready to go on I put it in position and use a transfer punch through the sound hole into the holes in the neck block and mark the tenon, then I drill that with a...

I do have a piece of salvaged red pine 250mm wide by 19mm thick at 4m long quarter sawn with a very fine grain and super light maybe for a top down the road. For first builds I'd be going with tried and true woods. Spruce for the top and Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. The neck...Queensland...

Looking forward to progress reports on your first build and as Mark mentioned dont hesitate to ask any questions. Trevor Gore will respond if they re...

Nice Kostal inspired rosettes there Mark.
I did a similar rosette on a build I did for late ANZLF member Kym Bell. The wood is thin pieces of a Coobah burl and between them is black purfling.

Is it explained on the build book how you add weights or shave braces on the finished guitar, when box is closed and varnish is done ? Is is not difficult to access these area on a finished guitar? Yes all explained. Trevor is so thorough he even makes a plan before going to bed each night :) Weigh...

Re: How do you deal with vanish and pore filler later on wood for frequencies measurement ?
If you consider the thickness of a finish to the thickness of the surface its being applied to....I don't think it's going to contribute much to the total mass of a top. Stiffness......most decent guitars have a very thin finish which is flexible enough so as not to impede free vibration of the top....
