Re: Archtop vs Steel String Acoustic Sound
What I mean is total body volume. like if you filled the two guitars with water and poured it out they would measure at the same amount. that and the port size determine the helmholtz resonance, what you get when you hum in the sound hole. I get what "volume" is ... but am struggling with the "inde...

Re: Archtop vs Steel String Acoustic Sound
I'm definitely in the less-educated category.... but I think if you go back to the original instruments, Archtops were large-bodied instruments that needed to be heard acoustically in an orchestra. Those instruments would have had a lot of punch but not so much sustain. Flat tops were comparatively ...

Re: Major f**k ups
Recently, I finished my first Uke (a gift for my wife). Proud of the result, I took it to show a luthier mate who had helped me along the way and upon leaving his place with a sense of accomplishment I hopped into my car just as the wind blew the door shut; pinning the uke against the steering wheel...

Anniversary issue
With my anniversary approaching my wife expressed her desire to learn the Ukulele ...so I made my first ever uke: a concert (on a budget). Huge thanks to Paul (Ozwood) for his assistance and advice. Top : Spruce (Ozwood cast-off) Neck: Meranti Back and sides: Alleged Meranti? ...but looks more like ...

Perpendicular to the soundboard. Is that always with the grain perpendicular to the strings (across the bridge)?

Re: Ukulele bridge, quarter or rift, etc?
Hi Jim
Researching on the net has some suggesting that the perpendicular growth rings of quartersawn can create a splitting point in front of the saddle and argue for rift sawn.
(I'm tempted to use burl and avoid the restless nights of torment and worry. Lol!)

Ukulele bridge, quarter or rift, etc?
Hi. About to make a uke bridge but unsure of best grain orientation.
Thought I'd ask what most of you folks do?

Another Quake
My thoughts are with the people of Christchurch enduring yet another quake. Info is sketchy at the moment but I'm sure the memories of 2011 must make it all the more traumatic.

Re: Electric Bass Timbers
I should have mentioned that this sketch just shows the "concept" of how you can go about it but the colours may not be right for the Musicman pup. Nordstrand pickups has a schematic for a different switch (on/on/on) that might be worth while. http://nordstrandpickups.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/...

Seymour and Shepparton police have arrested a man and a woman in relation to a number of offences including the alleged thefts of multiple musical instruments. Police have released photographs of some of the stolen items in the hope that someone may recognise them. http://www.vicpolicenews.com.au/ne...

Re: Hlw do I install jack in a cigar box.
It's a bit dodgy but it works.... 1. Secure your box to a bench. 2. Dill 1/4" hole where jack is to go. 3. Get yourself a 3/4"+ diameter straight router bit with a 1/4"shaft. (make sure the cutting edges run the full length of the cutter body or slightly beyond at the shaft end) 4. Insert shaft via ...
