+1 for Qld Maple and NGRose they have been so reliable for me and are easily avail in quartered or flatsawn planks. The NGRose is my favourite of the two, it is a pleasure to carve or rout and has a little of that Blackwood shimmer when lacquered.

Once they are in the system they seem to get delivered no problem Yep, this accounts for stories that people tell me of posting full size cased guitars at AustPost rates, once they stamp it it's not going to get questioned again ... I have had this work the other way when buying guitars from the US...

Now my dog thinks there's an I'iwi perched somewhere in the workshop ... they blend nicely with my Lefty Frizzel record that's playing here. Thanks again David, I'll spend some more time with your bird recordings later on, but right now it's a nice rainy day for fretting. I'm trying out another Acac...

Koa - Kourtesy of David Hurd

Anyone else find little bits of Hawaii popping up in their instruments lately ? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3415/3287090357_a53fc2a9eb_o.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3649/3340652823_69ca608e08_o.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3349/3340669961_4038facfca_o.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.c...

Allen, I ended up asking the two shops I have worked for ... One has only sent 'bolt on' guitars to the USA thru AusPost, ( ~ $Au$150 ) the other uses TNT for everything on account and says to allow ~ Au$300 to send an electric guitar in a case to the East coast of the US and maybe Au$250 to the Wes...

Great to hear this stuff is on it's way - sorry to hear about what a hassle it's been ...

If it's okay Bobs? - I can pick mine up from Geelong as I will no longer be a Queenslander by the time this lot is sorted.

Cheers again, Anthony

Thanks Graham, I'll definitely be going that route when I return to my home and my 'real' workshop in Melbourne later this year. ( in time for a Melb winter :!: ) I'm not balking at the expense in the long term ( and I'm not about to give this game up any time soon :) ) The bandsaw comparison makes ...

Gold Jim, I don't do the fender shape often, but I know the feeling of looking around the workshop for the right radius on a bottle of stain or a chisel handle to do concave curves when sanding. I usually head for the curved end of the belt sander and wiggle back and forth to adjust radius :) I was ...

Thanks Fellers, In this case I'm quoting for set neck instruments, otherwise I would unscrew and pack, I guess Leo was on to something there after all ... :) Looks like most electric cases exceed the AP limits by just 10 mm or so. I know that it all depends on how friendly/ busy your particular AP s...

Shipping to USA ?

Hey folks ... Anyone sent a guitar to the US lately ? I've got to get some quotes, but thought there'd be some collective experience 'round here. I'm talking electric solid bodies in SKB style rectangular cases: Bris to New York, but any anecdotes gratefuly taken on board. I'm guessing that they'll ...

Looking good! Those look like Stew Macs vintage tuners. I'm gonna need some of those tuners for two old Kalamazoos that I have here and I've been wondering how sloppy they are and hoping the 'ageing' wasn't too radical on them. Mark I'm a big L00 fan so I'll be watching this, I guess that was you on...

Gratay mate ... can i see some more pics ? I love the 'clean' fretboard treatment and the amber tone of the top... it's making me thirsty just looking at it ( or maybe that's the 82 percent humidity here this afternoon ... ) and Bob I know I'm gonna love that Koa 12 fret 0! that's a wonderful combi...

Looks good to me ...

Without eyeballing the whole guitar it looks right.

Grain direction, filler, serial # ( 1991 ), tuners all seem correct to me.
Someone else here might know their later model Gibbo's better than me.

Sounds like the price was good too ?

Well done.

Brilliant Craig,

Well, I'm going to have to try this but i'm bald as and my lady friend has corkscrew hair ( notoriously sensitive to weather ). I wonder if the curls will interfere with the readings ?? :)

I might have to go for 10c of ballast instead of 5 ...

Hi Liam, I strongly recommend New Guinea Rosewood or Queensland Maple for neck timbers, both easy to carve and can look great. Not too expensive in QLD either. I have played alloy necked guitars for years. You tend to gain a lot of top end tone and sustain ( and weight ). You lose a lot of left hand...

And lots of benchspace... not to mention a good stack of electric slabs over by the window.

Have fun!
