Re: Contemporary Stand

Thanks all for the kind comments That looks great! :cl I really love this design, it's between elegant and invisible. How do you secure the prop to the U-shaped part? Markus, there is a dowel at the apex of the "U" which is a firm fit into the end of the prop. (I am also wondering what that lady is ...

Contemporary Stand

Hi all, Chose NOT to post this in the gallery, (as not an instrument!!), but I am interested in the opinions out there. With no build in the immediate offing, and arising out of the need to find something spectacular for my son's birthday, I put this design together for a stand for his new baby: Con...

Re: Ok THIS is serious

Got to agree :D But it is the South African version of Marmite which is the real deal  But seriously, I think it comes down to what you grew up with. 12 years here now, and I've become accustomed to all things Australian, (including the grotty snags) but despite multiple attempts, Vegemite ...

Re: French Polishing--when is enough bodying?

Hi Rob,

I'll take you up on that :D

I come down to Melbourne (fairly) regularly to run factory trials with our 3rd party manufacturer, and usually stay in South Yarra, so I'll get in touch when I next head that way.

Love a stickybeak.

Re: Engellman and Silky Oak Classical

Hi Paul, and thanks.

The body shape is a bit of a fusion (read cheat).

I used the bout dimensions out of C&N but traced the transitions off my wifes 40YO Yamaha.

Re: French Polishing--when is enough bodying?

Thanks for the tut Rob For Rob and Nick, I have another version of the Milburn site, but it's on my home PC. The one I think you have seems to have changed. The whole bit about levelling seems to have disappeared, which makes a mockery of the advice, I agree. I'll post the version I have from home. ...

Re: French Polishing--when is enough bodying?

At the risk of a flaming from Rob and co, and speaking as one who came into FP via the self-taught route, I still found the Milburn site the best resource I found. However, their site is corrupted, and there are whole bits of the process missing, which is confusing.I obviously entered via the back d...

Re: Engellman and Silky Oak Classical

Thanks Dennis, There was some tendency, but luckily the figure itself was the best indicator......... just made sure I carved and scraped accordingly. Fortunately most of the tearout occured on the headplate during machining, and conveniently disappeared under the veneers and tuner plates, leaving o...

Re: Schapelle Corby?

Some indications I have seen of what Martin was alluding to above, was that this was not "incidental dealing" but a highly organised family trafficking operation. It would seem she was drafted in at a late stage after arrangements had been disrupted, and got copped.

Re: Idea's Input Please

A couple of comments from my side, on the Cedar for back and sides: I have used a lot of this for various furniture projects, and both the colour as well as the hardness of the timber can vary widely depending on the soil and growing conditions, from dark red and firm, to pale pink and quite "wooly"...

Many thanks for the kind comments guys.

While I'm not set up for recording with any expertise, I'm looking at adapting my son's mike to my laptop, and get him to record a .wav to post.

Re: loss of radius

Cumpiano's book is fine as a starting point, just make sure you read the updates on his website (http://www.cumpiano.com/Home/Book/textbook.html) and don't treat Cumpiano's method as the only way of building a guitar. My building process is influenced by numerous books and people.....including many...

Engellman and Silky Oak Classical

As usual, when I get to posting my build, there is a flood of beautiful instruments to make me look ordinary :( This has taken 4 months of actual build duration. The neck rough-out actually started a year or so ago and then sat on a shelf until Oct. An interesting exercise for a tone-deaf non-musici...

Re: Sand paper on radius dish

You can use the standard blue back 80 grit sheets from bunnings. Just butt them up and then trim the outside edge. It works fine. And don't forget to pick up a couple of snags while you're there. I have no beef with bunnings sausages. That's assuming here IS any beef in Bunnies snags............. :...

Allen with your FP process finish becoming milky, I have had the same thing happen, a white haze appears before my eyes while I’m using the rubber, there is a name for it that I cant remember right now . Every time it’s happened it’s always been a cold wet day. I have always thought that it’s the te...

Re: Alcoflex as a french polish solvent

Some info from a (lapsed) chemist. Water and ethanol form an azeorope, or constant boilng mix at 95% ethanol. You can only get better than this by distilling over a dessicant. As said, even that will swiftly move back to 95%, by absorbing water. While the RH has an effect, the 95% mix is effectively...

Re: Steph's Tiger Tenor Uke

A frustrating day. Went to rout out binding channels with my new Stew mac binding jig and the screw holding the bldi Bosch Colt trimmer in the cradle flew off and the cutter started chewing into the plastic guide ring. I managed to killed the trimmer before it chewed up the uke and it's now sitting...
