Re: Going electric

Thanks for the info everyone - I'm sure I'll need to read over this thread many times. It was my intention to carve away a lot of material from the body because of the weight of the woods. Even so it will be too heavy to sustain prolonged playing, I've got a lot of nice totara which would work nicel...

Going electric

Hi guys, I thought it was about time I went electric. I've been building mostly ukes. I've got quite a lot of good quality hardwood. I want to make the neck wood run through the body of the guitar - I forget the exact term for this type of construction. The wood for the body will be tallow wood and ...

Re: Is it possible to straigthen bone saddle blanks?

I've processed quite a bit of beef bone from it's raw state - much like wood it has a "grain". Cutting thin pieces across the grain when not fully dry, in my oppinion, would have the effect as you see above. As for straightening.... well I have no experience doing this. The first experiment would be...

Tack cloths

Hi, I was just down at the local Mitre 10 and noticed for the first time that they stocked tack cloths - Red Devil brand, made in Canada. It says on the pack that it contains no waxes or silicones but I'm still unsure if it's safe to use. I wanted it mostly for cleaning joints pre-gluing - does anyo...

Re: Considerations please for violin making manual.

Thanks Guys, Have had a look around the Maestronet site - looks good. Thanks Dom for the link to the Roger Hargrave site, I think I'll be downloading quite a bit from there. The Ossman book is really cheap. I think I remember seeing a copy for $23nz with free shipping - it would be worth getting it ...

Re: Considerations please for violin making manual.

Thanks Mathew and Dom,
I did see Juliets book yesterday while looking at some book sites - I'll probably get a couple of manuals so I can compare methods.
How about the manual by Bruce Ossman, is that any good?

No unfortunately - I like the old days when you looked through the adds, rung the guy up, went to view, struck up a relationship, did a bit of negotiating and the shook hands.

Can you take a look again at the Tanner on Trademe. I asked the seller a question about getting some more height from the saw. It wasn't exspensive so I havn't much to loose if it's not. At the moment I'm following Graigs advice, ie, I...
