Re: Lap slide
Go ahead and get all the specs the customer wants, scale length, string spacing at the bridge and nut. Figure out if the pickups work with the bridge string spacing, and adjust. Go with a strat type pickup, or a wide pickup pole spacing for the pups, if the costumer wants wide. I like 25" or so scal...

Re: 2 geets done
Thanks all! A coupla things, that Koa Weez was a pain in the butt. A bunch of problems, and you might be right about the too much silking! Too stiff maybe? I think I like the wider grained stuff. I used Old Masters brand varnish, and it really brought out the grain, and color, especially on dat koa....

2 geets done
Hey all.
I finished a coupla geetars.
I didn't polish either one out,
because they are for me.
EMG pickups are very good!
Very pleased with the sound.
The acoustic one is very balanced,
and I like the way it sounds.
A little tight though.
Plus, it's purty!

They don't want you, unless you're experienced.
They don't want you to use hand tools.
If you want to use hand tools,
it will be a hobby,
or, if you use hand tools and make beautiful items,
and you can actually sell them,
good on you!

Re: wipe on polyurethane finishes
I'm trying the "General arm-r-seal" finish right now on a slab git. It's a wipe on polyurethane finish. This is about 5 coats or so. Takes a lot of coats, but it seems to be building. I'm thinking about 6 more will do it. The control cover is ktm-9, and is a cutoff from the top cap. See the differen...

And wood.
Great work, Matthew!

Re: 2011 bass build
Wow!
I was curious, Matthew, if that large piece of wood stays fairly flat,
or does it move around on you?
Especially when you are caressing it.
Nice work!!!!!!!!!!!!

"They" say .005".
I say when it is polished, and you haven't gone through the finish.
Thin as possible.

Re: So I need a blockplane ...
Well, I can't see paying a lot for a plane that is a copy of one made years ago. If ya got the bucks, go for the bronze. These Stanleys are everywhere. Oh, the older ones are better, imo. The low angle one is best. The tall angle one, which is shorter, has its uses, sidewall shingling. Lateral adjus...

Re: Sort of "Kona" build
Allen, first off, you spell your name wrong.
Just ask Alan H.
Anyway, the sides are 3 1/2".
Why? Because that was the size of my wood.
I was going to use it for a 3" wiess.
Pretty scientific.
I like to put stuff together and see what happens.

Re: Sort of "Kona" build
Hey Alan. I had this idea to build a lap steel and be able to use back and side wood for a regular guitar. I keep seeing nice sets, and nice tops, but they are too small. So, I am using some African mahog I had laying around. We'll hear how it sounds. Here's a pic of the neck joint. Should be strong...

I think I'll call it, "The Pram".

Re: Weissenborn Lap Slide Style Scale length and plans
How about shortening the scale length a bit, shifting the hole a little bit, and making the f.b. a little longer. Three little bits can make a big difference, and won't change the playability much. I can change playing on a 25" to a 23" scale length with no problems. A "bong" is better than a "boink...

Re: 8 string lap steel guitar
Cool, Luke!
I build and play 6 string lap steels,
and have an old National 8 string that I love to play.
I also make my own hardware similar to yours.
Saves money, and it's fun to do.
Someday I'll make an 8 string.
Maybe this will get me going!
Alan.

Re: Weissenborn Copy Build
Looking good, Bob.Hey, I've got a question for you or somebody else here. I'm at the finishing stages on 2 of these weiss-things. That makes 4. Question is, when you bend the back at the upper bout for the "break", do you get a dish down between the sides at the upper bout? I keep forgetting to put ...
