Re: Trimming wood binding height

3/4" MDF 3" by length of binding making sure sides are parallel. A rebate in the top face same size as rough binding. 6 or 7 screw hold downs. Trim away on table saw. The edge is backed up by the MDF and comes out clean. Hope you can follow.

I use a hacksaw, but it's harder on the blade then cutting metal. Quite noticeable dulling of the blade.

Re: Power feed for a bandsaw

If one is to eliminate drift the band must track in the same location on both wheels. This requires both wheels to be co-planar. The band tracking on the front portion of one wheel and the back portion of the other puts a slight twist in the blade and thus drift. At first glance one might conclude d...

Re: Coloured Purflering and Binding

Also wood will tend to have more open gaps that need to be addressed. John: Have to disagree with you on this point. Have never used plastic so am speaking from the aspect of wood only. Given that, the only time I have had problems with wood purfling binding in reference to gaps was because of my w...

At those prices I don't think your missing out on anything. Just recently I got a dozen tops from Shane for about the same price. Nice wood.

Re: Question on stiffness and density

Generally, low density material will produce a lower mass top panel than high stiffness material, because to get the low density panel stiffness up, you increase the thickness. Stiffness moves with the cube of thickness whereas mass moves in simple proportion. So the material that will produce the ...

Re: Completing setup before or after finishing?

Check for loose frets, especially at the ends. After tapping frets in I clamp with a caul and run thin CA glue along the edge with a pipette. If frets are not down on board you may be pushing them down when leveling and they pop up again to cause problems.

Re: bracing

I don't think grain count matters as much as stiffness. For bracing stock I make it to a standard size,.625" by .280". Then put it in a jig with fixed points 18" apart. I then hang a pipe wrench in the center and measure the deflection in the same place. I then write the deflection on a pair and put...

Craig: I was just explaining that I thought the arm would bend. This was the reason for my first post. Then I realized the force was directly through the dial on it's spindle. I don't think there would be any problem with any type of side loading.

Re: Top Deflection rig

Some times my old brain takes a while to engage. Have been a machinist years ago and one had to be sure your dial was on a ridged support. I looked at your picture and seen the weight but said to myself" the weight is going to bend the arm the dial is mounted on". DAH  One does have to keep on...

My point was that someone other then themselves would be doing the data collection and handling their guitars. Tons of folks pass out data on these type of forums and we are all the better for it. Also not sure where the belittling is coming from.......???
