Unique soundboards
Have no idea whether it’s been done or not cause there are so many posts that are hard to keep track of anyway here it goes. This is a post id like to dedicate to uncommon soundboards, results, spec’s, tap tones and questions? The world of luthiery is experimenting more and more considering how expe...

As far as flat sawn back and sides go
I found some really nice curly maple boards on market place 3 for $153.00
Would have to make 3- 4 piece backs
But if I’m compromising structural integrity I’d rather not risk it
Just thought I’d get some opinions

Re: Lutherier's Workbench
Another question related to workbenches I need to make myself a more solid bench compared to my old work table which vibrates and moves like crazy but it was all I could aford at the time. I know I need drawers to store all my hand tools My measurements to fit my space thinking roughly 700x1400mm. T...

Cool,
Thanks again
It’s always good to be able to build guitars for all tones
This might be a good wood for my next build.

Re: tasmainian Oak soundboard or back and sides
Cool thanks once again, Definitely love this forum I would not use it as a soundboard but have used it for back and sides on guitars and recently an octave mandolin. No idea what species it is, I just kept sniffing around at Bunnings until a nice piece appeared. Nothing wrong with it, it makes nice ...

Re: tasmainian Oak soundboard or back and sides
This is a group reply So you guys are telling me if I went through bunnings and found a really straight grain piece for an acoustic guitar it would already be dry and stable enough to use, for back and sides or neck? And people would still buy a guitar with bunnings supplied tasmainian oak back and ...

I’ve been reading through posts etc haven’t heard much about acoustic guitar tops or back and sides
Has anyone used Tasmanian oak for either of these?

Modifying guitar plans
I’ve already got plans for a j45 (slopped shoulder dreadnought) I’d love to make a 12 string version in time but these days plans are soo expensive even PDF plans that you can print to scale still come at a cost obviously not including the cost to print them. Anywho what’s the best way adapt the pla...

Re: Where to get good veneers?
I’ve been looking on eBay and market place There’s some there, On my next guitar I want to make a wood ring rosette or a radial rosette (not buy one) As far as solid ring I can’t find any veneers that are at least 1mm thick I don’t have a machine shop so I can’t thickness them unless I just use a ha...

Re: Help with OSMO PolyX
While we’re in this topic
I have already started a chat similar to this
I’ll be using the polyx clear satin
How much will I need for a J45
The company recommended 4 coats obviously not flooding it
I don’t want to buy too much cause it’s not cheap and I don’t know when my next build will be

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - wood with defects
I watched this but he never mentioned fixes for knots
He only showed how to fill worm holes
In some back and side sets I’ve seen there has knots which are unavoidable and some bigger than others

Re: Australian cedar for soundboard?
Well that’s good to know
I must admit I’m amazed of the colour pallet of Australian tonewoods it’s kinda hard to pick out bindings and purflings to match without taking the shine off eachother

Re: Australian cedar for soundboard?
As far as bending that would be done by hand I’d be building a j45 It’s obviously big but not as curvy as other body shapes Thank goodness for body mold’s and spreaders This is the set I’m thinking of getting when money comes in if it’s still available https://guitartimbers.com/wp-content/uploads/2...

What would be a better option
I’ve played guitars with Blackwood, Queensland maple&walnut and New Guinea rosewood
But I’m still a newbie to Australian tonewoods

Where would be the best place to hang them Some say they lay it in the shade or leave flat out on the drive way What is the safest way Cause I also have little kids under 4 And do I do the same with the thinners rag? Or can I put it in an air tight container and use again Also as mentioned above as ...

Re: Sealing bindings/ purflings before pore filling alternates
Yeah that’s pretty much what I was getting at Sorry for the bad wording, Ok well I certainly won’t tape of the binding and top like that so looks like I’ll just seal top and bindings with shellac. Another instruction they mention is wiping oily wood like rosewood with with thinners or spirits to get...

Sealing bindings/ purflings before pore filling alternates
I’ve chosen to use OSMO polyx original To finish my guitar I’ve got spruce top wooden bindings and purflings I don’t have a huge amount of ventilation so non toxic and low odour would be helpful One thing I thought of was just taping it off with low tac painters tape and tape newspaper to the top wo...

Re: What is "Hand Made"
In my opinion as soon as a CNC starts doing major components such as carving necks, making bridges ect That’s when a guitar is no longer “hand made” which bugs me when company’s claim that they’re hand made but you go on a tour and they still reiderate hand made but there’s heaps of neck blanks bein...

Im still deciding on finishes for my first guitar build which is based on a Gibson J-45 I have hardly any room for any sort of spray so its down to Wipe on which is what I kinda preferred anyway My choices oil especially cause there’s so many types Some sort of water based (if it exists) shellac Som...

Tracing difficulty
Hey guys, I’ve been watching the Stew Mac tracing guitar shape video And I want to make a copy of my tanglewood folk small jumbo however mine is a cutaway and I want to build one without a cutaway is there a better technique to trace just the left side which obviously doesn’t have the cutaway? Also ...
